HP Pavilion Can't Find the Microphone

I’m hoping someone can help. I have an HP Pavilion running XP and I can’t get it to find the microphone. Everything in sound settings and mixers have the volume levels for the mic grayed out. I’ve tried the inputs in the front and back, different mics but nothing works. I fiddled with settings til I’m purple. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance…

Normally there is a applet under “sound and audio devices” icon in Control Panel that controls the codecs for the sounds and mike. The external mike presence has nothing to do with the section being grayed out. HP audio IO functionality is often part of larger combo chipsets. Make sure you have the precise right driver for the chipset. Verify the audio chipset by the machine model # not the system readout. Also check the BIOS to see if there is any audio or mike IO controls there.
