Obtuse only if you don’t live in North America. School bullying is the the cause celebre right now. Asking for us to start focusing on it is to ignore how incredibly highlighted it is already.

What if Noel worked at a grocery store during the day? And on the smoke break outside the store, other co-workers started criticizing Noel for doing gay porn on the weekends and evenings. Noel took offense to it and yelling ensued and customers complained. The store manager upon learning of the events decided to fire Noel.

A place of work, especially one that involves interaction and good relations with the public, needs a much higher standard of behaviour than a school. Employees also have a completely different relationship with their employers than students have with school staff.

It’s an increasingly unpopular stance, but I agree. Not only is it not the place of a school to provide a bully free environment, it’s impossible. Bullying has been around since the dawn of time and will continue until all humans are dead (Ok, maybe all but one. It’s difficult to bully oneself).

Back in the day, schools handled/escalated most cases of bullying like this:

1. see if kids can work it out amongst themselves, intervene if necessary
2. teacher scolds bully, perhaps administers in class punishment
3. bully sent to principle to be further scolded or punished at the principle’s discretion
4. parent(s)/guardian(s) of all involved are notified and expected to work it out between them from that point forward
5. any further incidents at school result in a call to a parent to pick the instigator up, possible suspension/expulsion
6. parents of victim take legal action against parents of instigator as appropriate

Notice, if the bully did not straighten up after a couple of warnings/punishments, the school handed the matter over to the parents to be resolved. Parents (or guardians) were expected to control their own kids. The job of a school is to educate, period. Having schools take on responsibilities traditionally assigned to parents will more often than not result in an institution that does neither well.

I believe in some states at least teachers are mandatory reporters. If he were making porn and is under the age of consent, then it is a matter of statutory rape, not freedom of speech.

So would being a male escort which is legal in some areas. Being a hard core porn actor is not the same as being black or gay. There’s a level of common sense required in life and for this kid to decide that hardcore porn as a side job and being a high school student went together like peanut butter and chocolate was an extraordinarily stupid thing to do. He’s forcing the principal to react to a situation his idiotic decision has created. The fact he has right to do it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a monumentally stupid decision.

Please don’t equate an 18 year old adult choosing freely to do pornography to earn money he can share with his family to prostitution.

Because parents sending their kids into virtual prostitution is a real thing, and it’s horrible and shouldn’t be compared to what this guy did.
