HTML help...

i’m making a website, and i want to liven it up a bit. i was thinking of stuff like borders and graphics, but i can’t seem to make it work. i’m using Yahoo Geocities Advanced HTML Editor, since i think the premade types just won’t work for what i’m thinking of, but i’m simply a dunce at HTML (well, i know the basics at least, but that’s all i know, no fancy stuff :frowning: )

any kind, genius-at-html (or at least not-dunce-at-html) type dopers out there who can help?
ps. this is for a homework assignment (due tomorrow :panicky face:), so no nude pictures or anything vulgar… [sub]i know you guys too well haha[/sub]

chants mantra
preview, preview, preview, preview, preview…

Well, since you’re a little vague about what specifically qualifies as “fancy stuff”, I suggest you do what I do. If you see a page with a gimmick or effect that you like, view the source code with your browser and see how it was coded. Just be careful you’re not lifting any original javascript or graphics that are copyrighted. There are plenty of sites out there with royalty-free art and scripts for non-commercial web pages, Yahoo would be a good place to start.

Good luck.

I guessing this is too late but anyway . . .

Do you use Windows? If so there is a program called Front Page Express that come with windows that is a visual WYSISYG (What you see is what you get) editor, similar to a desk top publisher (not quite the same but it’s a decent analogy) You can use this to add tables, with borders and graphics etc.

You need a basic understanding of HTML to use it. But you should be able to generate a half-decent page if you are used to using word etc.
If you don’t have this installed (Start>Programs>Accessories>Internet Tools) you can install it from Add remove Programs (Under the control panel) Choose Windows Set-up, then click on Internet tools and click Details. Check the Front Page Express box and click OK - You will need your Windows CD.

If you don’t use windows you can probably download a decent editor for your OS.

There are lots of good web design and HTML tutorials on the net too, it’s worth having a search and taking a look.

Hope this helps.

OK rereading the OP.

If it’s Grpahics that your looking for try searching for ‘clip art’ or ‘web graphics’

If you have any specifc questions please post them, If I don’t answer them I’m sure somone will

A good on-line reference is here.

I’m not sure what you’re after, but it sounds like you might want to start looking around hours 8 to 10 or so.

By the way, if you see a page you like, and would like to know how they coded things, you can always right click and select “View Source” to see how it was coded.

Sorry if this won’t be quick and easy for you. Good luck on your assignment.

thanks you guys! thank you so much!

works furiously on website

work, work, work, work, work

And, of course, if you have any particular questions, post 'em here, along w/ a URL to your site.

Um, looking back, that sounded a tad snippier than I intended. Really, it is a serious offer.

Typing “free javascript” into Google will get you some good results. This’ll get you all the scrolling messages, flashing lights, customised cursors, “smart” links, and other gimicky stuff you could want. It’s usually just a matter of pasting their code into your site. IMHO however, a little of this stuff goes a very long way. Too much makes the page slow to load, and downright annoying to look at. If in doubt, black text on a white background is simple, stylish, and often hard to beat.

As far as HTML editors go, I use CuteHTML. I don’t know if it’s the best, but I really like it. You can get it online as a free trial.

If you use AIM, and want some live help, or have any questions, feel free to message me - my SN is freeride boarder. I know a fair amount of HTML/CSS and should be definitely able to help you with anything you’d need for this assignment.
