Hugo awards 2025

I decided to attempt to vote for the Hugo’s this year. Mostly, because for $50, they give me an awful lot of “Hugo nominated” fiction. And I’m kinda looking for new authors to follow. Let’s see how much of the material i get through before the voting deadline.

Interesting. I read a lot fewer novels these days, as what I want from scifi isn’t always what’s popular (and this has always been true, it goes in waves) - the last few years it was more cerebral and social, while I tend to the junkier end of the scifi spectrum.

Oh, not even close to 100% (for the genre or my preferences), but enough that the rewarded books felt more like thoughtful work than fun. And right now, I’m putting more emphasis on “fun” due to IRL for more than sufficient reasons.

Please let us know what tickles your fancy, I’m always looking for a good read!

I usually try to read all of the nominated novels, but fortunately I don’t vote, because it may take me over a year to get to them all.

For convenience, this years nominees:

Adrian Tchaikovsky got two novel nominations. He once  one of my posts on bsky, so it’s almost like we hang out!

Well, I’m planning to start with short stories, and work up in length. I doubt I’ll get to the series before the vote. (Although you get a lot of books in nominated series if you sign up, any one of those is a series that’s popular with my friends.) Maybe the novels? But maybe not.

Yeah saw that …he’s a very good writer . :kangaroo:

So did T Kingfisher. Those are the only two on the list that I’ve read. She is also a very good author. Both of hers are fantasy, not science fiction. And one is really creepy.
