Last night (Aus time) I watched a brief bit of the Trump reception party, and was gobsmacked to see that the background decor was a brilliant BLUE colour. I mean, WTF, the Trumper just got crowned and they chose BLUE??
But this morning, watching the same clip on the news, the blue is now RED. Red as red can be.
So, what was going on? Were my local news sources playing funny-buggers changing the colour just for shits and giggles, or was there something more happening?
Blue must have been deleted from the broadcast afterward… Just like global warming, all mentions of LBGT, and healthcare were deleted from Whitehouse.gov yesterday.
Blue may be removed from the flag later this week if Trumps Hemorrhoids act up.
If you’re talking about the inaugural balls, there were at least three of them. The pictures may not have been from the same event. There was a “Freedom Ball” and a separate “Liberty Ball” in the same building; maybe they were color-coded.
I may be mistaken, but pretty sure the clips I watched were from the same ball, with Trump and his Missus having a dance, then Missus and Mister Pence being introduced to the party.
But even so, why on earth would any inaugural ball be sporting a BLUE background??
I’m pretty sure they did this at all of them. Two of them were actually in the same building, in different rooms.
Blue is one of our national colors and the most prominent color on the seal and flag of the president. It’s going to be there no matter who is the president. The carpeting at the inauguration was also mostly blue.
Trump wore a blue tie at one of the debates with Clinton. Clinton wore a red dress.
According to this Wikipedia article on “Red states and blue states”, blue was always the Republican color until in 2000 that the colors really started to mean something.
The party colors aren’t as important as they are in some other countries. All of the Republican presidential campaigns since the colors were set in stone in 2000 have used blue as the most prominent color on things like yard signs. It’s not like in, say, Canada, where you would never see an NDP sign that was anything other than orange.
FWIW, colour coding is stupidly rampant in Australian politics. The fact that every single Coalition politician felt compelled to wear a blue tie All The Time was a running joke during the Abbot administration. Maybe it’s because they know half of us are functionally illiterate :smack:
Currently in America, since the 2000 elections, red has been the Republican color in electoral maps and states that go for republicans are called “red states.” The same goes for blue and democrats.
The OP gave the color-party connection more weight than is realistic and then was surprised when the republican president had a “democrat color” themed ball.
The OP is apparently Australian. Outside the United States, political party colors and symbols often have a very important role. Certain colors are treated as “belonging” to particular parties. For example, the left-leaning party never uses blue as a prominent color and the right-leaning party never uses red.
In the United States, historically all parties have used all the national colors (red, white, and blue). It’s only since the 2000 election that the Democratic and Republican parties have become closely associated with a particular color, and even that’s not official.
Okay, the part that threw me for a loop was where the OP asked why anyone (and not just a non Democrat) would use a blue color scheme for their inaugural ball. I wondered if the color was really avoided elsewhere for some reason.
