Huh; so they snuck out a reprint of The Unprejudiced Palate

A year ago, even. I guess it makes sense, considering the recent gourmet boom.

I finally decided to get around to buying a pricey, out-of-print used copy after reading it from a library two years ago when I saw prices for under $10 pop up on my Amazon search.

It’s basically a food bible written in prose form by an Italian immigrant in the 40’s. Though it’s 60 years old, it’s still alarmingly relevant - from his explanation of the inferiority of produce in American grocery stores (they’re harvested pre-ripe in anticipation of lenghty, cross-continent travel times), to his invective against monied faux-gourmands who indulge in expensive bullshit food-fads rather than appreciate good, honest meals.

It also has recipies and instructions for growing your own food garden and making your own wine (again, all in prose form).

Anyway, I’m glad it’s cheap again, but it’s kind of sad that this isn’t my little secret anymore…
