Human Embroyos to be Cloned - Cast Your vote!

** Soulsling: ** I wasn’t questioning your decision (it is a touchy topic)–I was just curious how you were equating the two. I see now. Of course, since you disagree with me, you must be completely wrong

The main reason I am in favor of it is because we are unable to clone humans as of yet. Cloning still has many problems. Any cloned human–at least in this stage of science–would almost certainly not be viable. Therefore, it isn’t really a potential life–since it has no potential beyond a few stem cells. But that’s just me…

fredicus, and others,

I can’t get that site to work now either. It might change on a daily basis. Anyway it was the UK that was supposed to have gotten the go-ahead but I think the same site said that it was incorrectly reported and the discussions were not yet complete???

Yes.

Anyone know that the Texas GOP Platform says that mere research into human cloning should have severe criminal penalties?

This same platform called for stopping the “myth of separation of church and state” and mentioned God thirteen times.

Yes.
Most of the viewpoints I’ve read against cloning seem to beleive either that there will be huge numbers of clones, that clones will be second class citizens, or that the clones will be exactly like their predecessors. All of which seem like silly ideas to me.
Most real proposals don’t even talk about cloning full humans, but just organs. And human life is overvalued anyway. (that last may be interpreted as a joke, if so inclined).

Absolutely YES !!.. the advances to medical science are incalculable!!

transplants, skin grafting, tissue for drug testing, the list goes on and on!

This is the one of the first steps towards my immortality and I will be damned if the morals of the religious right, fear of the antichrist, fear of misues, etc. will stand in my way!!!

chuckle

the sad thing, except for the extremist bent of that last paragraph, that matches my opinion exactly!!

Why do people get so upset about cloning?

A clone is just a human baby. Anything that would be immoral to do to a human baby would also be immoral to do to a clone. So no, you can’t raise a clone of yourself and harvest its organs, since you can’t harvest your child’s organs. No, you can’t raise your clones to be a soul-less army of slaves, since that’s child abuse. You have to take care of your children in a humane manner. Clones are exactly the same.

If you are worried about selfish/narcissistic people raising baby clones of themselves…well, that’s sad, but it shouldn’t be illegal. Madonna can have a child now. If it’s wrong for Madonna to have a clone-baby, it is wrong to allow her to have a regular baby. Since we do not prevent selfish people from having children, how can be prevent them from having clone children?

Notice that I think there is a difference between a human baby and a fertillized egg cell. And also that if cloning is not safe for the baby it is not moral. You can’t perform unsafe fertillity treatments that might give babies birth defects, etc, so until cloning technology matures it would be wrong to create cloned babies.

After that, fine. Just keep saying to yourself: “A clone is a human baby. A clone is a human baby.” If we can keep that in mind we’ll be fine.
