Is it true that this is the quickest way to permanently kill any body part? Let’s imagine an unpleasant scenario…human testicles being numbed fully and dipped into supercooled or freezing water for minutes and then being dipped into boiling water for a few minutes.
What would be happening to the cells in the testes?
Having been a cook i was subjected to steam burns, which i think are probably worse than boiling water. In extreme heat, it would pretty much melt your skin.
I have also touched dry ice before, it doesn’t take very long to burn you, but i don’t think extreme cold would completely destroy tissue, just a WAG based on cryogenics, which i know very little about.
Well, I have been burned and frostbitten. The burns hurt when they happened, and long after. The frostbite didn’t hurt when it happened due to the numbing cold, and I didn’t notice it afterward until the tips of those toes turned black and fell off (just a bit-they grew back). Freezing causes cell destruction from ice crystals forming and rupturing cell and organelle membranes. Heat destroys cells by denaturing proteins and basically ruining all of the cellular structure (just think cooking, here). Of course, the nerve cells in the affected organs are going to be sending some strong pain signals to the brain until they’re completely done in.
Just dip the testicles in liquid nitrogen for few seconds, remove and tap firmly
GONE!
Tissue destroyed, and now in bitesize crunchy pieces.
At least until they thaw.
First up, it’s probably not easy to numb the testicles. Numbing the scrotum is easy, but the testicles are innervated from the viscera, which is a much deeper and more complex system. You might require an epidural.
Second, the testicles are wrapped in the scrotum, which is can be up to 8mm thick. That’s a fair chunk of insulation. You need a lot of temperature differential and time for the cold and heat to actually penetrate the testes to the center. And you will have killed the scrotal cells first because they are on the outside. I rather think the destroyed scrotum and exposed testes might require significant medical attention.
I’m not sure what you are after, but a Burdizzo may be more appropriate.
It’s far from the quickest way to kill body parts; and it might not even do a very good job. Water only gets to 100C when it’s boiling, and freezing water is only about 0C (you can’t dip something in already frozen water). That’s a pretty narrow temperature band it it would take a lot longer for the heat to transfer in or out of the tissues than if you used different fluids like liquid nitrogen to freeze or really hot oil to cook.
Just think of the question in cooking terms: You’re proposing killing the tissues by either freezing or cooking using water. You can deep fry something faster than you can boil it, and boiling is actually rather slow… thousands of people get burned by boiling water but pretty much all of them yank the body part away before it gets cooked.
If you wanted to kill a body part faster maybe pass electric current through it… or simply smash it blunt force trauma style. Better yet hit it with explosives.
I agree with mmmiiikkkeee: it’s impossible for freezing/boiling water to be literally the fastest way to kill something. If freezing water kills in X seconds, then liquid helium would kill it faster. And if boiling water kills in X seconds, then molten tungsten would kill it faster. I also agree with chorpler that the two-stage process doesn’t make sense. If freezing kills it, then you don’t need the heat stage, and if heat kills it, you don’t need the cold stage.
I’ll propose that the fastest method is to expose the body part to a plasma torch.
