Hundreds of thousands protesting bigt government in DC and nationwide

Cite?

Even Fox News is reporting the numbers as “tens of thousands.”

Some of the anti-Iraq war protests have had between 200-500,000 marchers. The March for Women’s Lives in 2004 in D.C. had estimates between 800,000 and 1.5 million. Immigration reform protests in 2006 had estimates of 300-500,000 in several different cities, simultaneously.

I think you’re overestimating the support this “movement” has.

Are you seriously calling people who support Obama racist?

Not all of them. Read the quote. Some people support Obama for no other reason than the color of his skin. Do you think Jay-Z was just being a “playful scamp”?

Crowd estimates are notoriously difficult and easy to over or underestimate depending on your agenda. I don’t know how many people are there. Neither does anyone else. There are a lot. Is it more or less than the “million man march” or an Iraq war protest? Who knows? I only mention the number because of the newsworthiness of the event minus any political bias.

Fox news would have to be trusted as correct, as they are fair and balanced… They estimate the crowd by counting all the shoes and dividing by 2.

No, you didn’t. You mentioned it in order to compare it to protests by the Left, implying that there’s more support for this movement than there is for leftist causes. It’s cool, you can backpedal, but you didn’t say, “the numbers have certainly exceeded those of other protests revered in leftward circles” simply to point out the “newsworthiness of the event minus any political bias.”

The torture debate is too complicated to break down into a sentence. I think Obama is misguided on policy. That doesn’t mean I think the people who support him are idiots. I think they’re misguided as well.

In general, yes. I think the culture of excessive spending to buy reelection on both sides has put our country in economic peril. I further disagree with Obama’s apparent desire to increase the deficit by billions of dollars to put policies into effect that sound great in a college classroom but won’t work in practice.

Read them again and further clarity might emerge. Are you saying that these people are protesting based on “false information”? What false information would that be?

Both sides use hyperbole to sway those who are incapable or unwilling to educate themselves.

Dismissing them as idiots may be comforting, but it’s not reality.

Because they are “corporate owned” and following the commands of the “fatcats”.

Actually that was my point. So far, the event is being ignored by media outlets who find it inconvienient. My point was that if the same number of people gathered for a leftward cause, the event would be being hailed as a “watershed political event” on CBS, ABC, et al.

I would be extremely surprised if there was more than a handful of people in that entire crowd who actually knew and understood what the scary words Faux news used to rile them up with like “socialism” or “public option” actually meant. Its just more convenient to use catch phrases than to admit you are simply afraid the country is rapidly moving away from their backward ideals and Obama is the biggest symbol of that change. That is one very homogeneous looking crowd.

Yes, the millions of people who watch Fox News are idiots. Every single one. It makes for a comforting and convienient explanation, doesn’t it?

Considering the white population in the United States is north of 200 million, I would expect that a few of them would want to come to DC. But you can keep telling yourself that they are all modern day Bull Conners if you like.

As usual, estimates of the size of the march are all over the place. Apparently, CNN says as many as 2 million people were there. That seems improbably high. Other estimates I’ve seen range from 70,000 to 1 million.

How come estimates aren’t more accurate? Surely someone with some logistics training should be able to reasonably estimate crowd sizes in this day and age? The same thing happened with the anti-war protests - some would claim 400,000, others would say only 30,000, but you could never find an authoritative estimate with methodology shown. That seems strange.

This news article says 450,000 to 1.2 million.

Either way, this was a massive march.

It will probably do about as much good as the anti-war marches did.

The D.C. Fire Department is saying 60-70,000. I would take their word over the organizers or participants.

Evil One, Glen Beck is a pustule. He is so poisonous, dropped into the Mississippi in St Paul, there would be a fish kill all the way down to St. Louis. Catfish would crawl out of the water and puke their guts out on shore. Is he the kind of man you would hold up to your children for an example to admire, to emulate?

And the level of corporate support distorts any message you might wish to send. That corporate lobbyists open their checkbooks to make this happen leaves you with two handfuls of maybe. Maybe there is a huge popular movement that would have showed up anyway, but now you’ll never know. (I’m assumng you already know about the extent of corporate sponsorship, and will take that I don’t cite it to you as a refusal to insult your intelligence).

Uh, Sam? Oops, you did it again. Associated Content News? Who the fuck are they? Why, an utterly non-partisan source of unvarnsihed truth, no doubt! Who happens to offer advice on “Promoting a 9/12 Group or Tea Party”. Gosh, can’t get more objective than that!

Well, maybe you can’t, but I sure as hell can!

Jesus. I wasn’t quoting them as an authority. I posted a range of quotes between 70,000 and 2 million, and I SAID that estimates were all over the map and it would be nice for someone to actually do proper measurements. My only purpose of posting that cite was to show the wide range of estimates. That was just the first web page that came up when I Googled it. I have no idea who they are or who they are affiliated with.

I could give a rat’s ass who they they are, since I already SAID that these estimates tend to be all over the place. I also alluded to the fact that this march probably wouldn’t make any difference. So stop jerking your knee already.

Because they have shown who they work for every day, all day long. They are a joke among a group of horrible Tv news networks. They are a propaganda network. When have they ever presented a story that was positive for a dem or progressive? They backed Bush like imprinted ducks. They hate democracy .

I would actually be quite proud of these movements if they weren’t bullshit. I’d love if there was a legitimate grassroots campaign to protest the expansion of the government. Except - where were all these people from 2000-2008 when the federal government experienced its greatest expansion in history? Maybe a tiny fraction of them were actually irate about that too, but to me this doesn’t look like a legitimate anti-government protest, but a “oh shit y’all, there’s a nigger in the white house!” protest.

Well, right now it’s the lead story on NBC news, which is calling it a “No to big government” rally, talking about a sea of thousands of people gathered from all over the country on the Capitol Mall, and saying the rally was organized by a collection of conservative and libertarian groups – not by big insurance companies.

This. These types of people are just following the sound of the largest drum and their thoughts and considerations should be treated with either contempt or at best, suspicion.
