Hunting For Food In The US During WWII

Saw a video yesterday that obliquely referenced meat shortages during World War II.

How did that shake out as far as hunting? Were hunters expected/required to give some of their meat to the war effort?

Also, did more people take up hunting during the war to supplement their rather limited food supplies?
