Hurray for The Carpenters!

Jesus was a carpenter.;j

I knew this thread would eventually prove irresistible to persons craving a little cheap hipness.

“Long ago and oh so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
Your guitar it sounds so sweet and clear
But you’re not really here it’s just the radio”

If those lyrics combined with Karen’s voice don’t move something in you, you’re pretty close to dead inside. IMHO, of course.

Sonic Youth does a great version of Superstar.

I’ll say goodbye to love
No one ever cared if I should live or die
Time and time again the chance for love has passed me by
And all I know of love is how to live without it
I just can’t seem to find it

Kind of reminds you of Karen’s life and never fails to bring tears to my eyes.:frowning:

For you youngin’s out there, Superstar was covered by virtually every female singer of the time. I defy you to come up with a better version than Karen Carpenter’s.

The Sonic Youth version most definitely isn’t a “female singer”.

Uhm hmm. Isn’t it a little past your bedtime, laddie?

(…proudly marches off - hipness intact.)

Here’s some Carpenters trivia for you: The Carpenters both went to Downey High School in Downey, CA, the same school James Hetfield and I went to. Near the school there are two apartment buildings that Richard owns, and they’re both named after Carpenters songs. One of them is called “Close To You,” and I think the other one is called “We’ve Only Just Begun.”
