Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

Great post/username combo!

CBS is reporting that 500,000 homes are without power already.

DC Metro service suspended tomorrow as well.

Pottstown, PA. So far no power flickers. Lots of rain, intermittent gusting. The creek out back is about as high as I’ve ever seen, but it’s got a long, long way to go before my basement is in trouble. Here’s hoping that stays true! Flashlight next to me, emergency radio fully charged (Red Cross, solar cell & hand crank), but I’m using the TV until the power goes out. We didn’t lose power when Irene came through, but that’s no guarantee for Sandy. I suppose the only saving grace is that we haven’t had the weeks of rain that we did last year, so the ground was no where near as saturated at the start of this mess.

I wish this were over with.

My game score would be five.

My MIL lives way out on Long Island. She’s out of power and it sounds like her house is taking water. It sounds like she may be headed for the Red Cross shelter soon. Crap.

I was working in Pottstown during the last big flood. Be safe. That town could be a disaster area.

Up here in York County, ME we are at the far leading edge of the storm. Lots of trees beginning to fall, lights flickering off and on as branches bounce off the lines. Storm surge at local beaches should kick in at local high tide around 11 PM.

Power went out. Stayed out. This might be it.

i was at commerce square as well. one time in the winter the 21st street wind tunnel got me. it gets very icy under the train overpass. the wind skated me down the ice patch twice, then a guy came along and helped me over the ice patch to the steps. it was amusing.

i’m waiting for the pictures of that area to go under. that dip fills up like a diving well when the river floods.

i felt bad for the people with dogs earlier today. dogs and humans looked totally miserable.

Howard County MD. Video taken a few min ago: 00096 - YouTube

Windy, but not extremely so.

Here in Oshawa, ON, it’s starting to be windy with specks of rain and the clouds are moving very fast.

Philly’s NBC-10 just showed video from a house fire in Wildwood, NJ. They put the pumper on a flatbed to get to the house because they weren’t sure the fire truck would get thru the water!

Now there’s a carbon-monoxide alarm across the street. Fire police are standing in the (two-lane) road to direct traffic. It’s getting windy. That is a really thankless job.

East Brunswick, NJ here. It’s windy but thankfully not much rain yet so hopefully not too many trees will come down. Thanks for all the info being posted - it’s kept me busy doing stuff and let me think that I’m in control. Plus it makes me forget about my broken tooth (assaulted by a piece of lettuce, last night).

Stay safe everyone!

Btw here is a google map with the predicted track, cone etc:

And before the transit shut down.

Hi,** rocking chair**! West Philadelphia checking in; my company had the emergency hotline loaded with a list of closed locations by 6 this morning, so I just listened to the long list (every location from Boston to DC, inclusive) and didn’t have to go out. Glad you got home safe. Rainy and windy out here, but no real problems as yet.

It’s getting bad here. Winds are really whipping the trees and branches are beginning to break. Some leaking in the attic around the chimney. Almost no seepage in the basement so far.

I still have power but part of the town is out already.

:frowning: When was the last big flood? I’ve only been here about 6 years, and I’ve not been through one.

I’ve had the weather channel on all day, and it’s really jolting to be watching all the storm info, and have it scrolling at the bottom that the weather here is “90 and Sunny”.

Keep safe, all.

Don’t know if someone else said it, but DC federal government is closed. I’ve flickered a few times, but for now the power is on. I also went in to my attic and found some water leaks.
