About 8 years or so. High Street was completely under water.
WaWa just tweeted (ye gods, I’m actually watching Twitter) that it’s closing all stores in PA, NJ, and DE.
I’m near the hospital, on the side away from the river. If you’re talking downtown Pottstown, maybe I’m still ok. I hope.
WaWa?
Convenience store chain. I think it goes up through CT, not sure where else. It’s named for a goose.
The worst of it was downtown. I think the hospital made it through ok. The center of the flooded area was right around the motorcycle dealer on High St. (If its even still there). You’re probably fine. Be careful anyway.
Our version of 7-11. Wawa is never closed. Even in the worst blizzard our Wawa is open.
We had mail delivery today in Northern NJ. I was shocked and pleased.
Here on Long Island it’s about to hit hard. About 200,000 without power but just getting started.
Governor Christie of New Jersey just had a press conference where he blasted the Mayor of Atlantic City for not evacuating his city, and said he was telling his state emergency workers to stand down until tomorrow due to dangerous conditions and darkness. He actually said “their lives are in your hands, now, Mayor.” The thing is, CNN had a split screen showing downtown Atlantic City where people were walking around and trucks and police vehicles were driving around in maybe six inches of water. He came off as a tremendous asshole.
My husband claims he’s never lost power in Astoria. So far we are good. I’ve stayed inside because of the tree/debris falling issue.
The town of Wawa, Ontario, is also associated with a goose. There’s a large statue of a goose just south of town, by the exit onto the Trans-Canada Highway.
The motorcycle dealer is still there; I’m a little shy of 3 miles east of it. Thanks for the reassurance. I’m pretty nervous.
I have no intention of sticking so much as a toe out of doors unless someone official comes to make me until this is over.
Sandy is something special, all right.
<resumes chanting> Go away, Sandy, go away!
We lost a couple of trees this afternoon, but the lights have stayed steady, believe it or not. I expect we’ll lose power any time now, though. Wind keeps getting fierce before it dies back down some. Makes me glad we had the roof replaced this summer.
Hey, Sunspace, does your statue look anything like their logo?
It is a little windy here in Howard County, MD but amazingly I still have central power - maybe that campaign of tree trimming BGE went on actually produced results.
YES! I just got to see a camera crew taken out in Ocean City Maryland. Maybe that’ll teach them to keep away from the big damn waves. And everyone is safe so we can laugh at them.
Storm surge has not yet hit AC. The inlet is already cut-off from the mainland. There is no way off. And the worst part of the storm is on its way. Those that stayed and did not evacuate are stupid.
Saw a nit, had an urge to pick it. More of a useless clarification, actually.
The chain’s name comes from the site of the company’s first milk plant and corporate headquarters in the Wawa, Pennsylvania area. The name of the town Wawa is in turn derived from the Ojibwe word for the Canada Goose (taken from “The Song of Hiawatha”). An image of a goose in flight serves as the Wawa corporate logo.
