Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

Hey, I’m mid-island. My basement is dry! We think it because there wasn’t much rain involved. But we have wind damage. Shingles, siding, my compost bin is smashed and half blown away. The wind was scary!

As a frequent Facebook status updater, his last one was fifteen hours ago. I’m a little worried about him, too.

I’m North Shore, Suffolk. We had really high tides that flooded, but we’re ok. My house is on a hill

We (still lost) 3G, so if he has no power or wireless he might be cut off like I was before power came on. I could not access Internet at all or even text.

Power is out for over 2 million people on the east coast. We are also having communication problems. Hubby was talking to a co-worker just now on the company’s mobile to mobile and it just died. Now when he tries to dial he gets an error tone.

So, he’s probably fine just sitting in the dark surrounded by wet things.

Here are the only two mid-lake buouys, one at northern Lake Michigan, one about 50 miles north of Chicago. Not showing 23 ft yet, but getting there (9 and 20):

As a total aside-- Mayor Bloomberg has been on TV a lot (of course). Has anyone else besides me and my husband notice that his sign language interpreter seems to be telling a completely different story than the mayor is? She’s telling a dramatic story full of intrigue and surprise and the mayor is droning on about policy and dire flood warnings.

Lol!! That’s too funny.
ETA My husband just said “That’s so true!!” When I read it to him.

According to the morning news, my neighborhood got over 8" of rain yesterday. Our house sits on a hill, so flooding wasn’t ever an issue for us. Near as I could tell, other than a couple of small branches that fell in the front yard, the worst we had was that one of our chimney caps blew off and it’s now sitting next to the chimney on the roof. As a result, we might have some water in our basement fireplace.

We never lost power, altho I think it burped once or twice last evening. Overall, my little corner of St. Mary’s county did OK, and other than a lot of leaves, there was nothing on the road as I came to work this morning. My mom lives in northern MD, lots closer to PA, as does one sister, and neither of them could be reached last night. I’d be surprised if they didn’t lose power.

We fared better than with Irene, so there’s that.

**Biggirl **- I noticed the signer on the news last night - she was really getting into it, certainly with more animation than the mayor…

I made it into work today. Saw a few downed trees and a lot of debris blown onto the road. Oh, and the river was way up. Still, though, most everything seems to be still standing. Many of my coworkers never lost power.

My basement, on the other hand, is a complete disaster area.

I went to sleep last night to the sound of intense winds and the house creaking. Woke up today and headed out to school. To my surprise, it was mild, almost warm, and there was no rain. The sun was even peeking through rips in he clouds. However, when the bus to school appeared, the driver said the school was closed! I checked the website. Campus closed due to water-main break. That was a surprise. On the way, I didn’t see any storm-related damage beyond a blown-down fence.

and my favorite part is when Bloomberg starts speaking Spanish in that droning nasal voice with no inflection just a total phonetic reading of the words in front of him…I doubt any real Spanish speakers can even understand him

We had a tree branch down in the back yard, not terribly unheard of in this neighborhood of old trees but apparently later in the night further damage was done to our fence. We checked it out after the tree fell and all was fine but I just got back from a barefoot housecoat clad run in the wind to find my wandering dog. Lunch time is apparently my “fix the fence” time today.

I have no idea what part of the town he lives in. But there were some biblical disasters in Brick. House were hitting the Montoloking Bridge. Out of control fires. Not good.

Damn!

She’s awesome!

My counterpart at another company works out of his home in Jew Jersey. I got an email from him yesterday morning saying that if I didn’t hear from him his power is probably out.

I just took a walk around the neighborhood, and there is surprisingly little damage. Mostly smallish branches, twigs and leaf litter. Only two trees down, and not even very big ones. My property survived with no damage at all. Still no power though. I am betting it will be a week or more, considering the widespread damage to the grid. Ahhh, nothing like a cold sponge bath!

Here’s a serious casualty from the storm. If I try to access YouTube, I get “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable”.

Alas! How can I get through the day?

Wow, me too.

Not a lot of rain in Astoria, Queens but we had some intense winds last night. Aluminum siding blew off a house down the street, I saw a large piece banging around on the sidewalk so I decided to be a good citizen and went outside to do a little clean-up. I retrieved the big piece but it was dark out and it sounded like LOTS of debris was banging around …scary, so I went back inside…(turned out that the noise was partially detached pieces of siding banging against the side of a house, not loose debris – but the sound was intense in the dark)

Now I’m mostly restless and I wish the trains were running so I could go into Manhattan
