Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

["]These pictures seem fairly apocalyptic.](Zerohedge[) Hope you Dopers are safe.

Popping in to wish everyone a safe journey through this storm. I’ve been through one hurricane and one tornado, and I’ve always thought I’d always take the former over the latter, but this one sounds like a doozy.

Holy crap! At first I thought the first couple of pictures were artwork :eek:

Utterly missed this. Probably academic now, but there were voluntary evacuation advisories for Lynn, and for a number of small towns along the south shore of Cape Cod. The only ones that might have been mandatory were for some of the tiny islands off the coast, which this time of year are mostly full of stubborn townies who refuse to leave anyhow. I was surprised to see Lynn marked, honestly – it’s north of me, and I’m well north of the northernmost point where Sandy could have hit the coast. They were likely worried about coastal flooding. Massachusetts Bay seems to be pretty well all right, but Narraganset Bay was getting pretty swamped.

I would also like to point out, before someone inevitably goes on TV and says something deeply insensitive about this being God’s punishment for all our myriad sins, that the eye of the storm veered west to the south of us, and doesn’t veer east again until it’s north of us. The great liberal, fornicating, gay-marrying, educated, lobster-eating, atheist heathen state of Massachusetts was apparently specifically spared the full wrath of the hurricane. Can’t wait to hear what they have to say about that.

Any self respecting southern storm (aka a hurricance/tropical storm) would avoid the state of Mass at any cost. Duh

Now maybe if you had offered Sandy some grits and sweet tea you might have got a decent visit.

I’m alive in New Brunswick, and very incredibly drunk. We lost power so it’s hard to say what’s happening out there but I think at least one small tree came down. I think the location of our complex sheltered us from the worst of it, but won’t really know until daylight. The Hurricane party continues tomorrow with friends/neighbors but I’m probably going to lay off the tequila.

MSNBC reporting that there may be waves up to 23 feet along Lake Michigan.

A friend’s Facebook post: “I am so happy that God is finally passing judgment on the Jersey Shore.” Tee hee.

Current stats: More than 5.7 million people have lost power, including most (all?) Manhattan below 39th St. At least 13 deaths, including 2 children. 7 subway tunnels flooded.

Wow this is really crazy. Where I am in Manhattan we luckily never lost power at all, but the subway troubles could be really bad. The city really can’t run without mass transit.

So both NYU Hospital and Bellevue have had to be evacuated and a fire in Queens has engulfed 15 buildings and is out of control. And it’s far from the only fire. I can’t imagine what FDNY is dealing with right now.

I disagree. I saw his earlier announcement – “Don’t be stupid. Get out.” – and I wish someone in Cali would be as stern and to the point when there’s a brush fire. If he’s right, and people die because they stayed in AC, will he still be an asshole?

As far as photos, this sorts out the phonies and the realies. Although some say “unverified”.

And there’s flooding in the subways? Yikes. How long will that take to repair, d’ya think?

Breezy Point, Queens is almost gone. Fires popping up all over the place. Firefighters having problems reaching them.

One of the New York deaths was in my small town (only 17,000 or so people), when a tree fell on a man’s house and killed him, injuring his family. This happened around 6pm last night. I heard the fire trucks and ambulances mobilizing but I had no idea. It really hasn’t hit the national news yet… This is in the lower Hudson Valley (not far from NYC), where there are another three confirmed deaths as well.

It’s relatively quiet here this morning, and the power’s still on. There were a couple of flickers last night so I had a flashlight and some candles at the ready, but haven’t needed them yet.

I listened to the gusts of wind and the groaning trees whenever I was awake in the night, but didn’t hear the sounds of any real damage. It’s just getting light out now, so I’ll be able to see if any tree branches did come down nearby. I’m not setting foot out of the house today; that seems safest until this storm blows over even if I do lose power.

The mayor of a Wisconsin town on the shore of Lake Michigan (and just north of the Illinois border) issued a voluntary evacuation order for low-lying areas near the water, and sandbags have been made available for residents to request delivery on! It’s pretty windy here in the Chicago suburbs, but nothing worrying in terms of damage.

Here in Calvert County, MD, we’re good. Still have power, no trees fell on the house or cars, and the storm’s moving away from us. A couple of hours ago, we were still getting buckets of rain, but even that seems to have mostly eased off, and the wind is minimal.

We have another round of flooding expected with this morning’s high tide. There’s a levee breech in New Jersey. And, unlike 80% of my fellow Long Islanders, I have power, so I am better off than most.

The sun is already poking through this morning.

I hope we hear from Hal Briston. Some bad things happened in Brick. No idea what part he is in.

Woke up to power on, though flickering. Lost all cell signal and 3G and its still gone. Decent flooding in town at the harbor at the end of my street, don’t know how the homes facing the harbor did. North Shore LI.
