Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

The wind and rain kicked up quite suddenly around 7:45 pm here in Whitby, ON. Now it’s cold, wet, and nasty outside. So far, though, it seems less than the hype.

Found a portable sump pump tucked away in the basement. Pulled up the carpet in the worst corner, and now the pump is happily sucking up the inch-or-so of water. I’m not looking forward to getting my landLord to fix the basement after all this is over with.

You know, now that there are cars floating down Wall Street and half of the NJ coastline is underwater, maybe people will stop talking about how supposedly “over-hyped” this storm was. Personally I’m glad that we have weather professionals who did the best job they could at getting people to take this shit seriously so they don’t wind up having to be rescued off a rooftop somewhere.

Anyway. Here in OH they are saying that the worst gusts, up to 60-70 mph or so, will be between midnight and 6 am. Great. The house is already shuddering with the wind. I really really really really hope we don’t lose power, because I have a lot of project deadlines in the next two weeks and I can’t make them if the Internet goes out to the house. Crossing my fingers.

In NJ the transformers are blowing up like fireworks. Seeing tons blow in the Oranges. In the P-way New Brunswick area heard all of them blew.

CBC is reporting a death in Toronto: a woman was killed by a sign which blew off of a Staples store.

Obviously, his major is meteorology. Or perhaps conspiracy studies.

CNN is reporting that the floor of the NYSE is under 3 feet of water.

Here’s video of the Con Ed facility going out on 14th st. Pop.

I’m kinda shocked I still have electric here in northern NJ…

Sounds like that’s not true - at least for now…

Hoax, apparently. The Weather Channel is reporting that it isn’t.

The flooded PATH station in Hoboken is verified, though, as are the various snapshots and video clips of the ConEd power station kicking off.

MSNBC is reporting 13 feet of water in the Battery.

They did say it seems to be receding at this point.

Here.

My little Sis and niece are in Manhatten. Hella pics they’re sending me. I’m actually pretty jealous.

I guess there was an actual big explosion in the last hour in Manhatten.

Dayum :frowning:

St. Mary’s County, MD - winds peaked just shy of 70 MPH sustained around 7:30 PM, now down to about 35 MPH. We had heavy rain all day, and even that has let up quite a bit.

The lake in my back yard correlates to about 8" of rain since starting overnight Saturday-Sunday.

Lost power for about 20 minutes, too.

Here, in the peaceful mountains of SW Virginia, we’ve got gentle flurries, breezy gusts of wind, and a promise of anywhere 1 and 24 (depending on elevation) inches of snow accumulation.

Letterman is on… recorded earlier but with no audience. Kind of cool.

I don’t know if this is tremendously insensitive as there are people who depend on this women, but I don’t honestly care…

I LOVE Mayor Bloomberg’s sign language interpreter!

The contrast between his utterly boring, deadpan delivery and her enthusiastic signing makes her seem like Bloomberg’s Luther.

Obviously, here in Ohio, I’m not getting hurricane force winds or flooding, but it is rather gusty. Sounds like a near constant dull roar outside. I’m glad the wind is blowing from the north and east. We have a huge maple in our front yard (on the west side of the house) and in most big storms, I get somewhat worried that it’s going to crash into my bedroom. Good thing maples are pretty flexible trees. Anyway, if I lose it in this, at least it should probably land harmlessly in the yard.
