We have one reported death in Mansfield, CT now - not much detail other than someone struck by a falling tree. No shit, I’m jumpy as hell. I kind of doubt I’ll be enjoying a nice relaxing snooze later this evening.
Power went out here in southern NH about an hour ago. I fired up the generator, and I still have cable TV and internet! All the comforts of home.
I’m in Manchester. Lost cable/Internet, but have power.
The wind is really kicking up now!
Checking in from Medford, MA. We still have full power/heat/comms up around Tufts Medford. There are awful wind noises outside and bits of the house are rattling, but other than that absolutely nothing has happened. The MBTA stopped the ferries after close of service Sunday night, and stopped all T services as of 2pm today. Amtrak has also shut everything down. AFAIK, all air traffic to and from Logan was canceled quite some time ago. I have not been dumb enough to leave the house since this started, but there were people of questionable common sense driving around until about dusk.
We’re still under a high winds advisory until about 6am Tuesday, but peak winds were supposedly a couple hours ago, and all the other weather warnings are off for the northern suburbs up here. There were some evacuation orders for down on the south shore of the Cape, and for Lynn, which is right on the water, but otherwise we’re just going to be soggy and covered with leaves.
I’ve been trying to find live webcams of the affected areas but I’m having no luck. Does anyone know of any that are still working?
Lynn? I have a friend who lives there, just across the street from the ocean, and several hours ago she was posting on Facebook about how all was well and the worst would miss them. I tried looking online but don’t see anywhere to find evac orders info for Massachusetts.
I must be only a stone’s throw away from you; between Tufts and the Mystic River. I can hear the wind outside, but I haven’t been out in it. Seems to be dying down a bit. Power and cable have been fine.
Just got a T-Alert: MBTA is resuming all services at the regular start of service tomorrow (5am) except for the commuter rail to Providence/Stoughton. They don’t say why, but I presume large chunks of RI are still without power.
Medford/Somerville seem to be pretty solid when it comes to power and comms. Nothing went out during Irene, either, or during the surprise Halloween snow last year. We have a lot of overhead lines, but also a lot of windbreaks. I’m literally on the next hill over from Tufts – I can see my house from the roof garden at Tisch.
Howard County, MD - it’s a bit windy outside, and rain of course, but no big deal. Took a drive out to Giant Foods about 1.5 miles away, easy driving since no one on roads, 2 customers in the whole store. Nice.
At least around here seems like a huge overreaction by the prognosticators.
The trees are killing people left and right in the tri-state area. It’s the hurricane of the triffids. One woman critically injured and two people killed in two separate incidents.
I’m kinda new around. Apparently Tisch is a library of some sort.
We’re probably within a mile of each other. If you know where the Whole Foods is, right by the river, I’m an easy walk from there. Perhaps a dopefest once this all settles down a bit.
Battery Tunnel and lower Manhattan flooded pretty badly. I’m on the upper west side and the water has come over into Riverside Park and parts of the Hudson Parkway.
This kid has to be winding up the reporter. He’s skeptical that there’s a hurricane?
He’s a student at Brown University.
Meantime, Hurricane Central from the Weather Channel reports that FDNY headquarters on Grand Street is being evacuated by boat.
OK. Cable TV, internet and land line just went down. But my new Galaxy S III smartphone can function as a mobile hotspot, so I am back online. Technology triumphs over nature again!
Tisch is the main Tufts library – the thing on University and Professor’s Row with the tower and crenelations. There’s a big garden on the roof level from which you can see most of the local hills, all the way out to some of the ATC towers at Logan. IIRC, there are loads of Dopers in the Boston area. Perhaps we can swim into downtown for lunch when the rain calms down.
This part of Brooklyn has never lost power from a hurricane; down in Canarsie, or Brighton Bach, or Coney Island, or DUMBO on the other side … that’s different.
He seemed high to me.
Just saw on the CNN crawl that they’ve closed JFK due to flooding.
There are, and I’ve met several.
I wouldn’t miss it. The last couple attempts to arrange a get together haven’t quite gotten off the ground.
