Good lord. A Queens woman went out barefoot, stepped on a submerged live power line and burned to death. One hopes the electrocition killed her before the fire did.
80+ buildings destroyed in a fire that occured in Breezy Point (in Far Rockaway) during the height of the storm. The fires were in the Zone A evac zone and could not be reached until 5am this morning. 25 evacuation-order-ignoring assholes rescued.
Greenwich Village Halloween Parade is being postponed until some time next week. NYC Marathon will take place as planned.
Recently on the news they interviewed Nana Visitor Nana Visitor - IMDb who they identified as “NY Resident”
Couldn’t they say “Actress”? Granted whe was interview about the situation in the streets and not on broadway, but still…

I’m in shock at the moment, I just found out that my Manhattan office-shop-equipment storage space( I have one room inside the showroom/warehouse of another business ) was completely devasted…it is located at Canal and Greenwich St.
Apparently the water came in high enough to “lift” the industrial metal shelving off the floor and topple it…that’s really all anyone knows because the fallen shelves are making it impossible to open the door but I can only imagine what lies behind.
Some of the goods, such as wire/cable…will be salvagable but most of them are specialized electronics.
The good news is that most of the stuff on the shelves was either obsolete product, damaged goods or oddball stuff I hardly ever need, I don’t generally keep much stock I order stuff as I need it for projects.
The bad news is that I had a batch of stuff waiting to be sent out on a project and I don’t even want to think about what it will cost to replace it…I’ll get my vendors to discount it but it’s still a 5 figure number.
I am glad that Manhattan is devastated. Oh, gosh, such a disgusting city and people living there. But I hope people are fine.
Raw video of (mostly) Beach Haven, LBI. The bay side is still flooded. The ocean side is covered with sand. A house or two knocked clean off their foundations. My cousin and her husband are down there somewhere, the camera never got a good view of their house that I could see.
Off-topic, but one of my great-aunts died that way. She wasn’t barefoot, but it was the same thing; she went outside after a big storm and stepped directly into a downed live power line.
You’ve been here two weeks – that’s long enough to figure out that saying stuff like this is not acceptable here.
Given the serious nature of the emergency in NYC, this is utterly inappropriate, even if not directed against a single individual.
Don’t do this again.

OK. Pardon me. There was sure better ways to express my anger.
Why are you angry at me?
Angry at a city that’s undergoing the worst natural disaster its ever faced?
:dubious:
Manhattan took his lunch money and Staten Island kicked sand in his face.
In Alexandria, VA my power went out at around 11:00pm last night and returned at around 10:00am. More importantly, the cable TV and internet were out from 1:00pm until 3:20pm. I missed most of the Jeff Probst show featuring Joey Lawrence. He was going to talk about his Chippendale experience. Life is unfair!! How will I be able to go on after this tragedy? Has anyone else in this thread suffered more than I? I think not.
Carry on, everyone. I’ll get over it.
Working at an insurance company immediately after a major catastrophe is my own personal form of hell. And I’m living it today. People have mostly been cool, which I appreciate, but we had 100+ calls in queue for several hours. Our normal hold time is 0-1 minutes, and very rarely more than 3 on a bad day. Today, we had people holding for over an hour. Just looking at the call monitor in that situation is so far beyond fucking depressing, I can’t even express it.
I’m going to go home, drink some sweet red wine, and cry myself to sleep.
Not too far from there, I live on Crescent just south of the Triboro Bridge …near the Astoria Blvd train station. I’ve lived in Astoria for 30 years now…about half of it here and half on 34th and Broadway. Needless to say I love it
I walked up to Ditmars and 31st today – one street was closed with a HUGE downed tree and I saw some smaller ones, but nothing earth-shattering. The coolest part was almost EVERTHING was open…not just the bars and restaurants and drugstores and grocers but even Radio Shack and some of the optics places and shoe stores…I saw only two or three places that were closed - one of those was the State Farm office :). And business was brisk…lots of people taking advantage of the day off. It was great to see everything so close to normal
Thanks Twickster…I can’t believe that was the post after I vented about my Manhattan business being destroyed
Drove around a bit today, the damage here is extensive. Phone poles broken in half, corporate signs down, roads blocked, streetlights and signs out, no power anywhere, this place is utterly fucked. Glad we were spared flooding. I don’t think anyone was hurt. Best estimate for restoration of our power is a week. This sucks. Trying to get up the nerve to head for Philly tomorrow. My thoughts are with everyone affected by this devestation.
Including you Ana. Still can’t believe this really happened in my own backyard.
He needs to risk a stamp for Charles Atlas’ free book…
Remember these?
