Hurricane Sandy: Potential Catastrophic NorEaster Brewing in the Carribean [edited title]

Calm down Travis, you should be back in your taxi cab by the end of the week.

Those of you who use Facebook like the pages Jersey Shore Hurricane News and Severe NJ Weather. Tons of good pictures from the area many that are exclusive. The ones from Brick and from Seaside are particularly bad.

Did you ever end up actually deploying?

If he’s this happy about the hurricane, he probably set off fireworks and danced in the street when 9/11 happened.

Sitting here at the armory. We have some small teams out but the bulk of this unit is so far being held in reserve. At my level we don’t see the big picture of how the whole NJ Guard is being deployed.

So, does NYC smell any better now, after its bath?

::d&r::

You think this was so witty you had to post it twice?

I’ll remember that idiot line the next time your lovely little state gets hit by a tornado.

Ok now this getting serious. The governor signed an executive order postponing Halloween.

The Republicans War on Halloween!

I’m supposed to be a volunteer at something in Asbury Park just after Thanksgiving. According to the organizer, there was supposed to be a bicycle race on the boardwalk. Err… Does Asbury Park even have a boardwalk anymore? For that matter, is the hotel still there?

Hurricanes suck.

You know what? Little snarky comments like mine about Halloween are one thing. But there are dopers here who probably lost a lot. Someone mention family on LBI. That was totally under water. The Bay met the ocean. Hal Briston is one of the few dopers I have met IRL. His town not only drowned it was on fucking fire at the same time. He has yet to come back on. His town is pretty big in area. I hope he lives far enough away from the shore. But even if he escaped the worst life is going to suck for a whine. Life is going to suck for a lot of us for quite a while. I don’t get offended easily. But you need bring a lot more funny if you don’t want me to think you are a total douchebag.

Knock it off. People have lost a lot and they don’t need your snarky little witticisms.

I’m so sorry everyone. I had hoped that no dopers would be adversely affected.

Has anyone heard from Hal Briston yet?

Reporting from York, Maine

We got lucky, it could have been far worse than it was, here’s an anticlimactic breakdown from yesterday morning to tonight…

Yesterday morning around 8 AM, drive into work, (Dover NH) wind starts picking up around 10-ish, noon, it’s starting to get blowy

Around 1 PM, NH governor Lynch declares a state of emergency, requesting people get off the roads by 3 PM, work closes early and we all go home…

On the drive home at around 2-ish, I’m amazed at how well my little VW Rabbit Mark 5 does in 45-50 MPH crosswinds, it completely shrugs them off, a co-worker ahead of me, in his big Buick Century is getting visibly buffeted around, my car’s a tank

Quick stop at the ATM to get some money in case the system goes down, them home…

Really blowy now, at home, I stand out in the wind, watching our pine and spruce trees whipping and bending (quite unsettling to see a 80 foot tall conifer swaying like a blade of grass), our rock maples are stoic, however…

Park my car in the garage, and head inside, we’re prepped and ready, my niece and nephew are over, as is my sister, all looking forward to the events with a mix of apprehension and anticipation

Around 4 pm, we lose power, 15 seconds later, our backup generator kicks on and chugs away, supplying our whole house with all the power we need, draw the curtains and practice light discipline to conserve fuel, as we have no idea how long the outage will be

And horrors of horrors, I discover my first “First World Problem”, the battery in my computer’s UPS battery backup unit has died, so I have to plug the computer directly into the…wall… Via a power strip! The. Horror, the HORROR!

Fast forward to this morning, power still out, generator still chugging away, since I’m unsure of if the roads will be blocked by downed branches/trees, I put my chainsaw, fuel, and bar oil in the trunk of my car, and drive into work, one road is detoured, so I have to take the long way in…

At lunch, I discover another “FWP”, now my car smells like Pre-mix gasoline, the horror!

End of the day, drive home, get home and discover the power is now on, and the cable is back up, so I have power and Internet back…

This may sound like no big deal, but bear in mind, we have to deal with Central Maine Power, and their past incompetence is legendary, but now, quite honestly, I have no problem with them, in fact, I want to congratulate them on an excellent job getting us back up and running, I only hope the rest of the state gets back on grid as quickly as us

So, all said, a little blowy, and a minor inconvenience for us, heck, we didn’t even lose any substantial branches or trees this time, not that I’m complaining…

Lets hope the rest of the affected areas get back on their feet as quickly as we did

Oh hell. No idea when the fuck the subways will be up and running. My husband needs them to get to work. No idea when the fuck the schools will be up and running either. I suspect the kids will be going to school until mid-July this year at this rate.

I don’t know what made you think it was a good idea to make comments like this when a poster not too far above you was just warned for something similar… so here’s one for you too. If you can’t resist making sarcastic, jerkish comments in the middle of topics like this, you should refrain from replying at all. Don’t do this again.

Buses will be up tomorrow. Is there a bus he can take?

It’s an option of very last resort. He takes the bus from NJ and then the train to work downtown. The train is quick. The bus would be a real pain in the rear. He’s going to stay home the rest of the week and then explore options starting on Monday.

He updated on Facebook this morning (about 11am his time) that he and his family were well with minimum damage to their home, but “the neighborhood is a wreck.”

That’s good to hear about him and his family, at least. Whew.
