Can anyone tell me which major energy companies are actively (and seriously) pursuing hydrogen as a viable fuel source?
Also, are these companies looking at it through a perspective of splitting the water with hydrocarbon fuels, or through environmentally clean sources (wind, hydro, solar, etc.)?
Pinnacle West (aka “Arizona Public Service”) is one I’ve worked with.

I doubt anyone is working on using hydrocarbon fules to separate the hydrogen from water. That would be counter-productive. At best, if you used hydrocarbon fuel to make hydrogen fuel, you would only break even. It would be better to use the hydrocarbon fuel directly (automobiles, heating, etc) as opposed to its being the “middle-man” to produce another form of fuel.
ChevronTexaco is workong with Ovonics to develope storage systems for hydrogen. CT is also doing something in the fuel cell area, but I’m not sure what. So, I think, is Honda.

wolfmeister, that’s what I thought. Then George Bush announced he was funding research for that in his State of the Union address. Apparently it’s going to be used as a distribution system instead of gasoline, which is exactly what you said.
