Why is it that: the same folks who applaud women killing their abusive spouses (ie “Good-bye Earl”), think that capital punishment is morally wrong? Does ANYONE actually think capital punishment for assault is right?
The same folks who applaud women killing their abusive spouses think that capital punishment is morally wrong? Now that’s a gross over-generalization if I ever heard one. No offense, Danny, but I don’t necessarily see the connection… elaborate a bit, please?
(If I’m missing something, I apologize… not at my best today)
Oh, spoofers, I did not mean ALL, but most of the “somewhat liberal, womens rights”, crowd is anti death penalty, too. I am overgeneralizing, of course. But, does anyone think that assault should be met with execution?
I doubt if anyone applauds (post a link if you have one), it is more that there is some understanding of the action and a lack of grieving for the corpse.
One can obviously be against capital punishment and quite comfortable with killing in self-defence, and some would argue that these situations have more in common with the latter than the former.
My view is that if faced with abuse, if possible leave.
But if you are faced with the prospect of being found and beaten or killed and your judgement is skewed by the fact of being in an abusive relationship, leaving safely can seem a non-option. Some people snap. They don’t have my blessing, but they do have my sympathies.

Daniel, to answer your question directly: I am opposed to the government-sponsored death penalty under any circumstances. But I would defend my and my family’s lives, even to the point of killing someone else if the situation required it. I can also understand how someone under constant assault might feel as if her life was in danger.
I guess I’m not buying the notion that abused spouses are essentially, in their minds, delivering justice (all right, buddy, it’s payback time!) as opposed to typically being in desperate fear for their lives. Is that what you’re suggesting?
Well, I’m against capital punishment, quite comfortable with killing in self-defence, and I think “Goodbye Earl” is one of the best songs of the 90’s.
So I’m a hypocrite, so sue me.
P.S. Why is this in the Pit and not GD? Is this a desperate cry for pain? “Please hurt me!”
I’m all for capital punishment for murder, rape and any other type of crime that does LASTING PHYSICAL DAMAGE to a person or persons. Perhaps if it was shown live to the inmates of our prisons, it would help curtail the spread of violent acts against people.
by showing them something extremely violent?
Dear Goddess! That is probably one of the most horrible things I’ve ever read!
True, but at least not a hypocrite!
Ok folks, 'self defence" is where, when under attack, you do exactly enuf force to stop from being hurt. In “goodbye”, the woman is in a hospital, and has filed for divorce and had a restraining order*. So, why not just “get out of Dodge” and have the Police arrest earl, who will spent the next 5 years in the Pen? Earl can’t beat on her when earlis doing hard time. Killing earl in cold bloood is NOT self defence, it is revenge and murder. Now, earl DID deserve 5 years in the pen, making 'freinds" with “Bubba”, and finding out how it feels to be abused. But earl did not deserve to be executed.
- and yes, I knwo what you’re gonna say:“the restraining order did not protect her”. A piece of paper is not a magic talisman, and will not stop the ‘earls’ of the world from doing that 1st assualt (after), however, THEN the Law steps in and slams the guy in the slammer. So, yes, it won’t stop that 1st attack, just all the others. She wa no longer in danger, thus it was not “self defense”.
