In Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers made at least one movie while he was doing the war bond drive. They show a scene from it.
So, any guesses as to what his hypothetical “Degree of Kevin Bacon” might be?
Audie Murphy has a Bacon number of two. My guess is that Steve Rogers would be similar.
Audie Murphy appeared in **51 **movies after WWII, so I don’t think he is exactly comparable.
You want a person who appeared in a propaganda film during the war as his only film appearance.
Well we can probably assume a worst case of 4 then, knowing that even if he never appeared with Audie Murphy in something that it’s highly improbable that of all the people Captain performed with, that not one of them did something with Audie.
In the real world, the 1944 movie serial Captain America co-starred Lionel Atwill and Lorna Gray.
According to The Oracle of Bacon, Lionel Atwill and Lorna Gray both have Bacon Numbers of 3.
If we postulate that Steve Rogers’ movies were similarly cast, then Rogers would probably have a Bacon Number no higher than 4.
OK, now assuming that he was listed as a co-author for something from the super soldier project, what would his Erdös number be?
Let’s assume Captain America appeared in a USO film with Bob Hope.
Bob Hope co-starred with Tim Matheson in How to Commit Marriage (1969). Matheson would go on to play Otter in Animal House (1978) which was Kevin Bacon’s film debut. So Captain America would have a Bacon Number of four.
And is anyone else surprised to discover Matheson was thirty-one years old when he played Otter? Peter Riegert (Boone) was also thirty-one and Mark Metcalf (Neidermeyer) and Mary Louise Weller (Mandy) were thirty-two.
According to the Oracle of Bacon, Bob Hope’s Bacon Number is 2.
Bob Hope was inThe Muppet Movie with Elliot Gould.
Elliot Gould was in The Big Picture with Kevin Bacon.
This would give the captain a Bacon Number of 3.

Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford appeared in Greatest Presidents of the United States.
Gerald Ford and Kevin Bacon appeared in Frost/Nixon.
So The Captain could also have a 2.
Or a 3.

Dr. Erskine likely has a Erdos number of 4. Certainly at least one of the people involved with the project would have gone on to work with either Eugene Koonin or Eric Lander, both prolific biologists who worked with genetics. Since they both have Erdos numbers of 2 the assistant makes 3 and Erskine ends with 4. While Erskine and Erdos do have overlapping careers I got the impression that Erskine was in Germany until very close to the start of the movie making it unlikely the two ever published anything together.
In the hypothetical Cap ends with either 4 or 5 depending on whether the unnamed assistant was a co-author or just him and Erskine.
That is surprising. I figured Metcalf was older, never looked at the ages of the rest.

Well, that contains an enormous assumption that he would have
- Been allowed to publish
- Done so before being ruthlessly gunned down by Thorin Oakenshield
It may be possible it was later written up by someone else (certainly everyone and their kid brother seems to be working on a variation of the super soldier serum) and that person might have given him a posthumous credit.
