I haven’t seen said pictures, but here’s an idea. You could have quietly dealt with this, removed the pictures, locked down your permissions and just tried to let it blow over.
Do you honestly think the people who saved the pictures care that you think they’re big meanies? Do you think this screed is going to make them stop and look honestly at themselves and go “Gee golly whizzakers, we sure did do a mean thing to Opal, we best baleet these pictures RFN before she gets even sadder!”
What you’ve done here is just played right on in to the hands of the people who think you’re nothing but an attention-seeker. I’m sure most Dopers wouldn’t know or even cared that you had “private” pictures on your server, and a lot of Dopers don’t even visit the offshoot boards and snark sites and so would have known nothing about them - until you brought it up, making sure everyone knows how persecuted you’ve been.
If you had’ve just taken them down and said nothing, it would have been pretty danged hard for those looking at them to figure out if you took them down on purpose, or the bandwidth had just been exceeded. Sure, there would have been more snarking but it would have eventually blown over. Now, they’re just going to keep digging and needling at you, because once again you’ve decided to make it a big ole dramascape, and they know they’ve gotten to you. Congratulations.
The gallery has a front-end with thumbnails and all of that, and the albums themselves from there can be “hidden” or “password only” etc. I did that stuff. What I didn’t realize was that the place the gallery actually stored the images could be accessed if you knew how. Poorly designed software… designed to give a lot of the feel of control, while having holes in it that gave no control. Like I said, I upgraded it years ago and unlinked it from everything, and assumed it was sort of dead in the water, not likely to ever be directly accessed again.
Your first paragraph is why I felt I needed to make this post: to make people aware that the intent was absolutely NOT to give anyone other than my SO access to said pictures.
Once again, could have been achieved by quietly removing the pictures/locking down the permissions so that nobody else could access them without your say-so. Didn’t need a massive monologue on the boards, where most posters aren’t even aware of the situation.
Um, the only person posting the pics was Opal. On an easily accessible website. One used by other people to host pictures as well (judging by the <name’s>pics folders).
Indeed. Especially since the mega-super-secret hacker skillz needed to uncover these secured photos was to click the link to a picture, think “Maybe the years haven’t been kind. I wonder if there are other pics”, delete the URL bits back to www.opalspics.com/gallery/albums or whatever it was and click on pictures from there.
So you’re saying you’re posting on this site to actually adress the members of another board. Have they banned you from wherever that is?
Because a reasonable person would have posted there in the first place.
I did remove the photos, first thing. But I have this issue with being misunderstood, and having those people think I put the photos out for public consumption was just too much for me. I have my limits. I wanted to at least try to set the record straight.
Google Images has all of those pictures archived. You might want to send a note through to Google asking them to unindex those pictures else they’re likely to be around for a long, long time.
Unfortunately, even though you have taken the site down, with Google still having them available for searching, you have done little but make everyone who read the thread aware of the existence of the pictures.
You offer professional web designer services don’t you? I hope you’re in the process of warning all of your previous clients that contracted your services that there are enormous security breeches on their websites.
Am sorry to hear about this, OpalCat. And for the jerks in this thread… truly disgusting and appalling. This is no time to make personal attacks. Shame. Shame on you garfield.
Well then address it with them there. What you’re doing right here is dragging off-board drama onto the Dope. Who cares if it was reported to you here? Most logical people would either address the issue where it’s being shared, or put up a note on their private webpage addressing it. Hell, you’ve got your own forums. I’m sure most if not all of the people who saved and shared the pics read those regularly - put a big ole bright red flashing warning up there!
Opal, I think that during my six years here you have been one of the most annoying posters on this board. I have watched you be a jerk repeatedly without consequences. Your explanation of what happened with your pathetic pictures makes no sense to me as an IT professional, and doesn’t fit the facts very well either. Please leave here, never post again, and seek help. Or at least make a vow to at least try telling the truth.
Obviously just my opinion, but I think you are seriously mentally ill and a major jerk and a liar. Your decision to post here about nasty people discovering how stupid you are is amazingly stupid.
