I Almost Went Out With A Literal Bang This Weekend

Forgive me as I’m typing this with one hand. Well I already owned a few guns but I bought a new gun a while back and was looking at it in my car on my property last week. I thought I had emptied all the rounds out, but there was still one round left in the chamber, that was my first mistake, my second mistake was dry firing the weapon with my hand wrapped around the barrel. There are no excuses I was careless and being a dumbass I’m just fortunate this was not a fatal error and I did not receive worse injuries than I did.

The bullet grazed past and damaged all my fingers then went through my hand, being kind enough to fracture one of my fingers as it passed through and then entered into my left inner thigh it almost managed to pass through the other side of my outer thigh it was bulged out and I could feel the round but it didn’t have quite enough power to exit through. It all seemed to happen in slow motion and I watched in disbelief as the blood poured copiously out of my thigh and hand. As I drove to the hospital it was weird I kept talking to myself telling myself I would be ok and to stay awake and calm down. I made it to the ER and was transferred to a hospital better equipped to deal with my wounds. They cleaned and dressed my wounds but decided to wait and see if surgery would be needed in my hand till later this week.

I had to talk with the police for their report but they and the hospital staff were all very professional and polite. I’ve been feeling very down about the whole situation and I probably hurt my pride more than anything but I’m starting to feel a little better as the days go on, I’m just thankful it didn’t end worse, possibly in my death.

I’m not looking for sympathy as I don’t really deserve any I just felt like sharing.

I’m so sorry this happened to you, and I’m glad that you are ok.

Lesson learned. Be careful.

Yikes! Hope the damage gets repaired satisfactorily, it’s fortunate you were able to seek timely help. And yes, a (painful) reminder to never become complacent that you’ve done everything right.

Your car must be a real mess right now.

Glad you’re not worse off.

I am so glad you are okay. Lesson learned, dude. ALL guns are loaded. I’ve seen Ivylad watch someone pull back the chamber and pop out the bullet, then hand him the gun. He will ALWAYS pull back the chamber himself.

Extremely scary, and I hope the injuries are ultimately not too serious.

I for one am glad you didn’t end up another entry in the Stupid Gun News thread. Sometimes one brief moment of complacency or inattention is enough for dire consequences to occur - I’ve had a few close calls of my own, although not with guns - and if we’re lucky we live another day with a lesson hard learned.

Always look. If it’s dark, feel.
Always point it in a safe direction when you pull the trigger like that.
Don’t have bits of you in line with the front end.

Jesus. So glad you’re ok (relatively). Take care of yourself.

Oh my gosh, man! That sounds scary as heck! I can’t believe you were able to drive yourself to the ER…you must have gotten there purely on adrenaline.

Glad you made it out ok, and I guess you can say you’ve learned - for real this time - a valuable lesson.

You’re also lucky you didn’t pass out at the wheel and kill someone. Whatever your gun-handling mistakes may have been, at least they only affected you. Driving yourself somewhere with a serious injury compounded your errors by putting other people at risk.

It’s called the ‘slide’.

You’re absolutely right I agree with you and if I had it to do over again I would call an ambulance, the only thing I can say is adrenaline and panic kicked in and it was like I was on autopilot, watching myself act but feeling outside myself, but I won’t excuse it, fortunately I didn’t make a bad situation worse.

I appreciate everyone’s responses, and yes my car and my pants looked like a horror movie but the doctors said I didn’t come anywhere close to needing an actual blood transfusion.

Allow me to join those who are glad it wasn’t more serious and those who hope you will be more careful in the future. But also to add that if you were in my family, or one of my closer friends, your name would go from pool to something like slow leak almost instantly. Just ask “Cousin Stumpy” about that one.

  1. NEVER point a gun at anyone (including yourself or parts thereof).

  2. Guns are ALWAYS loaded.

(I was taught rule number 1 as a young kid. That later saved someone’s life when he handed me a loaded and cocked gun - first thing I did was point it away from him, then proceeded to pull the trigger and shoot a hole in his ceiling. I now know rule number 2!)

So does this file under Stupid Gun news of the day… or Positive Gun News of the Day?

Glad you’re okay, regardless.

I’m curious to know if you were ever taught or otherwise learned that basics of firearm safety before this happened.

Glad you’re ok. Could have been worse. I too vote for a name change to “Slow Leak”.

What kind of gun was it?

The deadly kind.

I guess someone has to be the bad example we are all told about, the example we should strive not to emulate. Sorry it was you.

If it were me, I’d be so embarrassed, I’d never tell anyone. And if it were a friend of mine, I’d laugh relentlessly.
