And going fishing for foreign bodies (like bullets) that are ‘just under the skin’ has led many doctors astray, rooting around endlessly in bloody tissue, even with the use of ultrasound and fluoroscopy.

Are you telling us that all those Westerns and action films where the hero has a bullet fished out of him by an amateur with a bottle of whiskey and a pair of pliers were lying to us?

Why do you think it took two years for this abcess to occur?

Apparently it didn’t cause a lot of inflammation with its presence, but it did cause some, which percolated along very slowly. I suspect all the nasty pus that came out with the bullet was probably sterile, or the process would have been faster.

But that’s just a semi-educated WAG.

Familiarity breeds contempt. Your story is a modified version of that. Your familiarity with your weapons eased your guard down. You weren’t focused because you have begun to think you are focused when you are in the environ. Otherwise, always check the chamber would have struck your thoughts like your regular pulse delivers blood to your brain. A similar thing happens to race car drivers. They do it so much the danger of it goes into the back of the mind. It’s not that it’s not fearful, it’s that they forget to be afraid. Interesting.

Forgive me as I’m typing this with one hand. Well I already owned a few guns but I bought a new gun a while back and was looking at it in my car on my property last week. I thought I had emptied all the rounds out, but there was still one round left in the chamber, that was my first mistake, my second mistake was dry firing the weapon with my hand wrapped around the barrel. There are no excuses I was careless and being a dumbass I’m just fortunate this was not a fatal error and I did not receive worse injuries than I did.

The bullet grazed past and damaged all my fingers then went through my hand, being kind enough to fracture one of my fingers as it passed through and then entered into my left inner thigh it almost managed to pass through the other side of my outer thigh it was bulged out and I could feel the round but it didn’t have quite enough power to exit through. It all seemed to happen in slow motion and I watched in disbelief as the blood poured copiously out of my thigh and hand. As I drove to the hospital it was weird I kept talking to myself telling myself I would be ok and to stay awake and calm down. I made it to the ER and was transferred to a hospital better equipped to deal with my wounds. They cleaned and dressed my wounds but decided to wait and see if surgery would be needed in my hand till later this week.

I had to talk with the police for their report but they and the hospital staff were all very professional and polite. I’ve been feeling very down about the whole situation and I probably hurt my pride more than anything but I’m starting to feel a little better as the days go on, I’m just thankful it didn’t end worse, possibly in my death.

I’m not looking for sympathy as I don’t really deserve any I just felt like sharing.
