I had smoked half a bowl of mid and decided to go play pool. On my way there I came to a highway patrol roadblock in Alcorn County, MS. The officer noticed what was some weed in a small container and promptly told me to pull to the side. He then told me to get out and asked if I had anything else in the car. I told him I had a pipe under the passenger seat and that was it. He obtained the pipe and asked me if I had smoked earlier and I said yes. I was not given a feild sobriety test or a chemical test. I was then took to jail where I spent 4 hours in a holding cell till my dad arrived to bail me out (praise Odin he did). I was charged with DUI other and possession of marijuana. I now have a month and a half till my court date. Can some one please help me figure out what I need to do? What will happen to me and can I get out of this? Thank you for your time and help.
You need a lawyer.
Call a criminal defense/DUI lawyer in your state.
Thank you but money is very tight. I spend most of my money on rent and to pay for my online classes. I already work 40 hours a week. If I get a lawyer, will they be able to get me out of this?
Get a lawyer.
Or just accept the consequences of your horrifically selfish decision to drive high.
I hope not!

Legal advice is best suited to IMHO. Moved.

This is one of those instances where it will cost you more not to hire a lawyer. Consider it tuition for an important life lesson.
Then go get a public defender. In MD, it costs $50. Should be similar there. Good luck!
Whoa I wasn’t high enough where I couldn’t drive safely? I had drove 30 minutes to get there and I went through a road block. I didn’t get pulled over for swerving or crashing in to something. It was like if I was driving and had a beer or 2 and then blew a 0.05. I would be technically intoxicated but not impaired enough to drive recklessly.
Real advice: don’t take that attitude in court. A judge is just going to hit you even harder if he finds out how unrepentant you are.
Thank you all for the help. Honestly I couldn’t sleep thinking about this and what will happen. Is there any way this could get dropped for my record or dropped all together?
Oh yes I know. I never lied to the officer and I realize what I did was wrong. I’ve always been very respectful to everyone, especially to law enforcement because I know how hard their job is. But I can’t help but think that being polite and respectful can only get me so far. Is there anything else I can do to help my situation?
Get a Lawyer. A good one. Take a loan out or borrow money if you have to. Being utterly repentant and promising you will change your ways will only get you so far, but it’s a HELL of a lot better than saying “I wasn’t too high! I could drive just fine!”
I say just suck it up and accept the consequences. If you have a respect for law and order like you claim, then you will recognize what you did was wrong and take it. Tell the judge you are sorry, that you are going to try to quit smoking pot all together, and you definitely won’t drive intoxicated again. It was a stupid decision and you fully understand what you did was wrong. He/she might go lenient on you.
Oh, for gawdsake!!! Sevencl may I respectfully suggest you get the flying f–k off whatever high horse you rode in on?
I see you are new here, already made your way to the Pit. Stay there… it’s well deserved.
Brasel19, the advice to get a lawyer is good…sometimes you can use the yellow pages to find a cut-rate one who will let you pay in installments. Sometimes, if they’re any good they can find a loophole, or some kind of misconduct by the police and make this ridiculous issue go away. Barring that, it’s not the end of the world…particularly if it’s a first offense. If it comes to that, plead “no contest” to the charges, make a reasonable plea for leniency, take whatever s–t they throw your way, and move on.

Get a lawyer. A decent one will know the best way of reducing your punishment as much as feasible. Interview them and make sure they are sympathetic. Borrow the money from your father if you need to. It will be a good investment, and don’t do it again.
For instance, if DUI down there requires a test, a lawyer might get that dismissed. But no one here can tell you that.
Hell, if you had an odd looking growth you’d spring for a doctor, wouldn’t you?
Thank you all very much for the help!!! I really needed some support and good advice on this and you all have made this much more digestable. Again, thank you all for the help.
Well played, sir. Well played.
This was the standard advice I saw PD’s give their clients when I worked in a courthouse:
- Get a lawyer.
- Do nothing but go to work and come home, every day.
- Get your ass to church/temple (if you’re religious).
- Cut off ties with your potsmoking friends and/or dealers. Delete their numbers from your phone.
- Start going to NA meetings. (No, you may not be an addict but it certainly won’t hurt you to go.)
- Own up to what you did, tell the judge you are sorry and very relieved that you didn’t hurt an innocent person, that you’ve quit smoking and you’ve become the most boring 19 year old on the planet … AND MEAN IT. Judges can tell the difference between someone just pissing on their shoes and telling them it’s raining vs. true repentance.
And no more pot, ever. Don’t even THINK about it. Yes, I know there are lots of responsible pot smokers out there (and I personally feel it should be legal), however you’ve proven you’re not one of them considering you got behind the wheel. You dodged a bullet, you could have hurt or killed someone and ruined your own life in the process. Don’t take that risk again.
…or #1 anyway.
