No, I’m not. She’s pretty, sure. But stunning? No. Think of some of the other Bond girls - Ursula Andress, Halle Berry, Jane Seymour, Maud Adams, Barbara Bach. Eva Green is not in that league.
I think Bond called him “R” (following “Q,” get it?) and the codename stuck.
I, too, am looking forward to the new Bond movie. I’m willing to give Daniel Craig a chance.
Yeah, I have to admit despite my dislike of Craig, I’m getting pretty excited about this movie. I’m curious to see whether this new approach to the franchise will be better or worse. Brosnan’s later movies sucked hard, and I’m not a fan of excessive silliness and gimmickry, but Bond still needs to have some wit and humor. I hope CR retains some of that.
Wow, different tastes. I think she’s far hotter than all of them except perhaps Halle Berry.
I have to take my (steel-rimmed) hat off to you there, that’s a very good post. I’ve seen six or eight Bond movies, mostly after (and including) Diamonds. Maybe I’ll grab one other old one.
Omigod, I could not disagree more with that statement. Judi Dench was, without question, the single worst thing to happen to the entire Bond franchise, and that includes A View to a Kill.
Look back at the Connery years, or read the books, and see what the relationship between Bond and M is supposed to be. M may not have always liked Bond, and certainly didn’t always agree with him, but he always respected him. Dench’s abominable take on M started out by calling Bond a misogynist and some other string of insults. The true M would never speak to Bond that way.
I was really happy to hear that the new Bond movie was going back to the roots, but I practically wept when I read further that they were keeping Dench. Roots my butt, M is a man who respects Bond, not a woman who thinks he’s a dinosaur.
Well, you’re a guy, right? I’m a straight woman, so I’m judging based on my idea of aesthetic beauty, not on, um, ‘bangability.’ I can’t rate sexual attractiveness in the sex I’m not attracted to.
Women do, however, have it pounded into them starting at a very early age what constitutes physical attractiveness in this society, and I think the other women fit it much better than Eva Green. Plus, she smokes, and if I know someone smokes that always brings them down a notch or two in general attractiveness, which is definitely a personal bias of mine.
Those two statements, taken together, are fascinating. They’re probably even true. But I can’t shake a feeling of cognitive dissonance between them.
I saw pictures of Eva Green when she was announced for this role; didn’t do much for me. But some of the shots in the trailer, yow.
And I’m trying to figure out the difference between aesthetic beauty and bangability, at least regarding someone of one’s preferred gender.
One presumes that includes how likely the person in question is to agree to being…banged… by the observer/
I too am looking forward to a Bond movie for the first time in nearly two decades. And it does bode well for Craig that a second film has already been given a go before the first is even released.
Sir Rhosis
Bond said, “I guess that makes you R.” to Cleese when they were first introduced, but Cleese was credited as Q in Die Another Day. He was also credited as Q in the video game Everything Or Nothing in 2004. So Llewelyn’s death is not the reason for no Q in this movie.
Aside from the lack of Q, I will be seeing this in the theater. I always try to see the new Bond flicks when they come out.
Except that while she started out thinking he was a misogynist and a dinosaur, she also came to respect his abilities and what he accomplishs on his missions. IOW, there was character growth and change in her storyline. I really like her as M, and am glad she is back.
Sorry, haven’t read the entire thread.
I’ve liked Daniel Craig since I first saw him in a Lara Croft Tombraider movie.
Never understood all the hate about “ooh, he doesn’t have dark hair!”
I also don’t agree that a James Bond must immediately be universally accepted to be “handsome.” IMHE, some of the most handsome guys are the ones at first glance don’t strike you as hot, but the more you look at them, the hotter they get. We’ll see how he ages. But at least this Bond has a body I want to look at in a bathing suit. As a Gay guy, I’m tired of enjoying the naked female in bed more than the naked Bond in bed.
How can people say “Bond has to be pretty” and also hold on to the opinion that Connery was the best Bond?
Do people really think Sean Connery is attractive?
Well, a year or so ago, one of my friends came to the conclusion that Sean Connery was one of those guys any man could sleep with, and still not be gay, because he’s just THAT sexy.
On an unrelated note, my favorite James Bond movie is The Rock.
Well, true for me, for sure. But I can’t invite you inside my head, so…
I don’t know if you are male or female, but it has always seemed to me that men define who is attractive by how much they’d like to have sex with that person and separating out simple aesthetic beauty from sexual desire is difficult to do at best. “I think she’s pretty” tends to = “I want.”
I don’t know if it’s true for all straight women or if I’m in a minority, but for me, when I look at a man, ‘sexy-hot’ and ‘attractive’ don’t necessarily go together. For instance, since this is a Bond thread, we’ll talk about Sean Connery. Sean Connery, in my opinion, is not particularly attractive. He does not have classical or conventional good looks. I know other women who agree with me on that, and yet, given the chance, they’d hop in the sack with him in a second. He exudes a certain raw sexuality that some women find irresistible. And I think that may be one of the reasons behind why so many folks seem to think of him as the quintessential Bond. It’s believable that women would fall into bed with him, and that he’d as soon kill a woman as kiss her - that danger factor is something else some women find highly attractive and has nothing to do with how the man actually looks (and pretty much goes against biological imperative, too, if you think about it, but there it is). If Daniel Craig can exude that same kind of aura in this movie, it won’t matter that he looks like Vladimir Putin’s little brother.
As far as other women go, I can appreciate the beauty of long, shiny hair, big beautiful eyes, shapely bodies, etc., pretty much as I’d enjoy a lovely painting of a sunset or landscape, but as I don’t feel a sexual attraction toward women, I can’t gauge how someone else who is attracted to women might feel about a particular woman. I know what I’ve been told and shown via magazine covers, movies, TV, etc. what straight men are supposed to find sexy regarding women - we women are constantly assailed by it and are pressured to live up to it - but that’s not the same as experiencing that feeling yourself.
See above. YMMV!
Actually, there are a large number of women who I consider to be attractive, but who I don’t have any particular drive to copulate with. This includes most celebrities I see, actually. Catharine Bell. Is she amazingly hot? Youbetcha. Do I want to have sex with her? Not particularly. Same for Amanda Tapping, Alyson Hannigan, Catharine Zeta Jones, etc.
Also, lots of girls that I see on a day-to-day basis may be quite good looking, even incredibly hot in the sexy way, but I don’t particularly have any interest in them beyond the fact that they’re aesthetically pleasing. 30 seconds after they have walked past, I couldn’t remember what they looked like even if you held a gun to my head.
Of course, there is always the occasional girl that I see walking around on campus or at the Wal Mart or whatever, and the first thing that I think is “I’d bang that like a screen door in a hurricane”, but usually I have to get to know a girl first before I get that reaction.
Have you read the last line of the novel?
Have you read or will you before you see the movie read the novel Casino Royale?
My favourite recent Bond movie is The Bourne Identity. My favourite animated Bond movie is The Incredibles. I hold faint hope for the franchise but I can always dream that one day I’ll once again see a good James Bond movie with, you know, James Bond in it.
