I am a cat. I just ate a mouse that had been poisoned. Am I in trouble?

Nope. Don’t need answer fast. Basically, though, if I kill a mouse with some basic mouse/rat poison, and my cat eats it, do I need to start looking for a shovel?

I asked my vet this question and she said no. The amount of poison that a mouse ingests is not deadly to a cat. She didn’t go into further details, I think she just said “Don’t worry about it”.

The most common rat poison is Wafarin sodium. It’s action is internal, and based on blood levels, and is highly correlated to body weight. The amount that actually killed the rat is not enough to kill your cat, even if all of it is still inside the rat, which is not true. Only a very small percentage of the exposure amount of the rat remains in the rat’s body. If your cat was subsiding on a diet of high percentages of rat bodies, he might develop some symptoms, but probably not.

Tris

Rodenticides like D-Con don’t use warfarin anymore, they use brodifacoum. Like warfarin, this is an anticoagulant, but it is not flushed as quickly (note the elimination half-life of 20-130 days stated in that wiki article). That’s actually the reason they changed the formulation - the rat or mouse doesn’t eliminate the stuff between sub-lethal doses, and it tends to be more effective by accumulation. It apparently does increase the danger of secondary poisoning, however. It’s a definite concern in areas where a lot of rodent baiting is being done, both for wildlife and household pets. Unlikely that a single poisoned mouse is going to poison your cat, but there is a risk if they make a habit of it. Brodifacoum accumulates in the cat, too.

U r oviusly impostr. Reel cats typ lik dis on de interwebs.
