See here it seems like you are saying this sarcastically. Or have something to add.
Wow- a little over the top. It’s really not that big of a deal. I was just pointing out that we do speak English here, and it’s actually a rule and not just a preference.
But I do have to wonder- what is the compulsion to not follow conventions, to do things like this that is clearly not the norm, and when it’s pointed out to you that it’s not the way things are done, to proudly proclaim that you are “not normal” and that you are proud of this and will remain so forever and ever? Is it a form of attention-whoring? Is it a defense mechanism for people with low self-esteem? Is it just an immature attitude that will be grown out of? And like I said, I wouldn’t even have brought it up, but she asked.
I’ve been taken to task over my spelling here. I just blame it on the cats. That seems to be a resonable excuse
In order: Is anyone on the Dope really normal?; yes; yes; probably not. With any luck she’ll either leave or realize how bad she looks.
Sorry Olive, but you seem like a teenage girl and that every post of yours should end with ‘tee-hee! I’m so shpecial!’ This is not Myspace or Geocities. Until you use proper capitalization and punctuation, most dopers are going to sigh as they scroll past your posts. You’re going to be that supposedly cute character in cartoons that people just want to go away.
But, just my opinion, I don’t speak for everybody, your mileage may vary, please see your doctor for if you experience permanent eye-rolling, loss of breathe from excessive sighing, or repeated urges to say ‘kids these days! Get off my lawn!’
It’s less about what you said, although I disagree with your opinion on dropping in a foreign word here or there, but the oh-so-snotty way you said it.
ETA : For what it’s worth, the ellipses bother me as well, and, unless one of ~Olive~'s thread titles really grabs me, I’ll likely avoid opening the thread.
Joe
To me, the constant ellipses after every phrase makes the writing read like someone’s stream-of-consciousness meanderings and don’t feel ready for general public consumption. And like ZipperJJ so aptly wrote, it feels like there’s more to come, but it never does…
If you need to use ellipses rather than actual words and thoughts in order to feel special and unique, then I’m honestly not going to may much attention to what you have to say. The mode of communication here is through the written word; use it and the power of language to express yourself (because it can be a truly powerful tool) rather than some not-very-original “ooh I use ellipses so i’m different” nonsense.
Oh, lord. Now my mental image of her is going to be Vanille. Thanks…
It’s annoying to read, makes you look sloppy, and gives the impression that you have little self-respect. But that’s your prerogative.
I’m curious though: do you write like that when you write a resumé or a cover letter? What about when you wrote essays in school (assuming you went to school)?
Nermal, the world’s cutest kitten.
I’m reading every post of hers in Eeyore’s voice.
To me, the OP sounds like one of Kristin Wiig’s characters from SNL. Any of them.
Overuse of the ellipsis reminds me of this kid.
enough is enough …
i have had it with these muthafuckin’ …on this muthafuckin’ message board …
One of the reasons I’m NOT on other message boards is because people on those boards don’t bother to spell or punctuate properly. Using ellipses instead of periods and commas makes your posts harder to read. Reading a post like that is like trying to listen to someone who mumbles.
Instead of resorting to a gimmick to stand out, why not concentrate on writing something interesting?
You are, of course, free to do whatever you want, within the bounds of the board rules.
But just so you know, in my mind, you look like a complete idiot typing that way. I feel like I’m reading contributions from a mentally sub-par child.
This, too, is cutting it really close to being insultive. Please tone down the snarkiness.
If it really bugs you so much that you have to resort to name-calling, you know the place to take it.
I used to have a student who ended every sentence with an exclamation point! She was a great kid but it made me tired to read her essays! They seemed overly enthusiastic no matter what the subject was! You run a similar risk by using overly-predictable punctuation! You might consider that other punctuation could more accurately portray your intent!
Thank you. This misuse of punctuation adds a tone that is near-impossible to understand when the ellipses are used so frequently. You can’t tell if the person is attempting to convey that they’re stoned, or sarcastic, or an over-the-top anime fan, or being “special”/unconventional, or what. Furthermore, overuse of it removes one means of communication of tone, as a result.
Allow those of us who care about correct spelling and grammar to retain one tiny little corner of the Internet, please?
