False. The only circumstances in which a contingent election can occur are if the electoral vote is an exact tie or a third candidate gets EVs and there is no majority, neither of which will happen. If a state somehow refused to appoint electors (which would be unconstitutional, has literally never occurred since the Civil War, and would be grounds under the 14th amendment to expel all but one of its congressmen), the end result is that the threshold for victory would go down. If State X refuses to cast its 10 electoral votes, then all that means is Harris now needs 265 to win.
Looks like the state of Montana already tried this, with electronic absentee ballots. They didn’t get away with it.
From the article above:
The Secretary of State’s Office reassured voters that this problem was confined to the online system and did not affect any other ballots, including those mailed out. They are working diligently to ensure the system is functioning properly for all eligible voters.
For certain values of “properly.”
This is all good news. Thank you.
Yes, the problem won’t be what Trump does, it will be what he allows all the hangers-on to do while he spends his time golfing&grifting. That’s the whole point of the Project 2025 plan to fire 50,000 civil servants. They replace them with their own loyalists, who will enact the 2025 plan on their own initiative. Trump won’t care what they do, so long as it doesn’t directly impact him.
I’m not whistling past the graveyard, because I know Trump will surely cause problems if he wins or loses.
We MUST stand up for democracy, and stomp down any of Trump and GOP shenanigans/crimes/violence quickly and decisively. Including National Guard if needed.
This has gone WAY to far for too long.
My big concern is that the norms have been drastically subverted and degraded and who knows how long that will last.
The now current GOP knows that they can lie, distort, and encourage violence and there is no longer a strong enough “polite society” to effectively fight back.
If it seems that no one cares about truth, then anything goes. I fear that “alternative facts” will be acceptable for a long time.
I’m also having a hard time with the “MAGAts are too cowardly to do anything” argument. You only need a few Timothy McVeighs scattered around in specific places to do a huge amount of damage.
Prolly posted elsewhere - a good fit here.
Gee, nice photo.
Oh no siree bob nothing at all going on here.
Yeah I’m sure you’re hoping for that good result.
I like Joe Biden, and I voted for him in 2020. Nevertheless, if Trump is elected in November, I will blame Biden. Early in his term he should have announced that he would not run for election. That would have opened the Democrat nomination to a candidate who would be more popular than Kamala Harris.
I will vote for Harris. For November I predict a repeat of the election of 2016, Harris will win narrowly in the popular vote. Trump will win in the Electoral College. I think a Trump presidency will be disasterous.
Yeah, that’s how my wife feels. I think/hope that this was deliberate. Throwing the Trump team into turmoil. Shit Trump can’t remember who he is running against.
RE: The drop box in Wisconsin. Um no. I work for small county government. Our boxes (6 or 7 of them) are bolted to the ground and covered by cameras.
The easiest way to fool people is to wear a hard hat, a safety vest and carry a clipboard. A fake ID around your neck and keys clipped to your belt helps with this costume. And do it in broad daylight. There where certainly other people involved in this. County Clerk for one.
Do you feel that such a person HAS to exist? Anyone in mind?
I think it is possible Trump wins both the EC and popular vote.
The US is filled with horrible people and we’re about to get a pretty could indication of how many.
Too bad betting isn’t allowed on this site.
Well we’re gambling our future.
Not only yours unfortunately.
That’s why I said we and ours.
I’m not sure I follow, I interpreted “ours” as meaning “The future of the people of the U.S.”, but my point is that the future of the entire world will be negatively affected if an open fascist wins the presidency of the U.S. (again).
Ah, I thought you meant you as in you, madmonk28.
I do agree that Trump becoming president again would have a global impact, but I’m not sure it will be negative.
I’ve come to think it might be best for the world for the US to collapse quickly, before it does more harm and I think a Trump victory will bring that about, or at least continue the process at a faster pace.
There will be brainless brawls, often in taverns.
I think the reason we are where we are is that Americans have consistently failed to realize the threat that Trumpism represents. I remember how dismissive “moderates” where when he was elected in 2016, now even after a failed coup and project 2025 people think the fascists will just go away.
