Sure, boss.
I apologize-I didn’t see the stick.
Well, it’s possible that I over/mis-interpreted Madmonk’s post, in which case I apologize.
Unfortunately, I live in a country (Canada) in which national defence hasn’t been taken seriously for at least 50 years. And because of that, and to our shame, we have been over reliant on our NATO partners, especially the US (note: I was a naval officer from 1979 to 2011, so I know something about this).
So a collapse of the US (as Madmonk says: “I’ve come to think it might be best for the world for the US to collapse quickly, before it does more harm and I think a Trump victory will bring that about, or at least continue the process at a faster pace.”(bolding mine)) would be a catastrophic event IMO, for the US, Canada, and the rest of the world.
Not only would a trump US crash and burn hurt millions of us (US citizens) but it would be the bloody end of Ukraine and Gaza … just for starters. The millions of people that the disgusing, self involved, piece of shit that is trump would, kill, displace, torture, enslave, do not deserve the chaos, blood, and stupidity, he would bring. Thinking another turn around the dance floor with that leeching, bastard would … I don’t know. What is it exactly that trump would usher in that would make the world better?
Universal right to two scoops of ice cream?
(Dear Leader gets 3)
- huger and more golf courses, especially in desert states
- again huge, almost vat-like mandatory ketchup dispensers at all licensed restuarants
- bringing out tons more raccoon bronzer products to the nation
- making sure more librarians are armed
- way more paper towel rolls on hand in event of natural disasters
- tailorgate parties outside the White House somehow allowed
For sure. If Ukraine falls, Russia will start turning its sights on other countries, most of which are now part of NATO. If NATO gets involved it will get real bloody, real fast.
And if the US doesn’t get involved in the defense of new NATO members, that could be just the green light China is looking for to have a go at Taiwan.
If the US collapses, China will soon take over not just Taiwan, but also Japan, the Philippines, and whatever else it thinks looks tasty in SE Asia.
Yup, I agree with all this. I appreciate velomont’s highlighting Madmonk’s “before the [US] does more harm” part, as that’s the part I disagree with. I teach an entire classes that includes a focus on harms the US has committed in the world…yet even I agree with the others in this thread that a US “collapse” would engender much more harm than good in the world.
But the 47% of US voters just don’t care. They are selfish and stupid to the core. This is the US, even if the rest somehow win the presidency.
I’ll stop speaking for madmonk. Just speaking for myself, I am working hard for Harris to win. I fervently, desperately hope she does. I will rejoice if she does, and feel some optimism. But that 47% will still be out there, ruining the essence of this country. They hate this country. They want Russia and China to take over the world, and that’s that. (Which Doper always calls Trump the “America-hating Fuckstick?”). Obviously, it’s one reason why “Make America Great Again” is so ironic.
I’ll close off my participation in this thread by returning to the OP. I am dreading Election Day for several reasons (including, I’ll be working hard from 6 AM to at least 10:30 PM, as a poll worker whose team needs to be EXTRA careful to do it right)…and I will be very, very sad if Trump wins…but if Harris wins, my elation will be tempered by the ongoing, absolutely awful, unerasable reality of the hundred million (give or take) malicious idiots sharing this country with me.
I’m not saying my preference is for America to collapse, I’m saying that it’s collapse might be inevitable and ultimately a better outcome for the world than our continued business as usual.
I think that the collapse will be messy and painful as is always the case when an empire collapses, but some of you seem to think America is going to continue forever which is nonsense. What I’m talking about isn’t even that outside of normal political discourse, but very triggering for a certain type of American.
The Canadian government has pondered the collapse of America:
In a spring report titled “Disruptions on the Horizon,” a quiet office known as Policy Horizons Canada proposed American civil war as a scenario that Ottawa should consider preparing for.
This hypothetical was tucked into the middle of the 37-page document, which sketched the possibility in 15 spare words: “U.S. ideological divisions, democratic erosion, and domestic unrest escalate, plunging the country into civil war.”

So have many political scientists:
Emmanuel Todd is a prolific French anthropologist and historian, a student of family structure and its role in political and economic development. He has always cast his net wide; in 1976 he published La chute finale (The Final Fall), one of the few books to predict the near-term demise of the Soviet Union, which he deduced from its falling birth rate and other demographic statistics.
That infamous internet troll former US Ambassdor Michael McFaul had this to say:
But the greatest changes in the shifting balance of power among the U.S., China and Russia in the last four years have come not from Beijing or Moscow, but from Washington. After simultaneously weakening democracy at home and disengaging from leadership abroad, President Donald Trump is leaving behind an America in much worse shape to compete with China and Russia in 2021 than it was in 2017.
That would be me.
Re: Better outcome -
The “collapse” would cause the rise of bigotry and racism in America for sure, and the same for our treatment of other countries.
We are already a laughing stock on the world stage because Trump got elected. And is not yet in Prison. But, we are not North Korea as Trump would like us to be. Justice grinds slowly, and very fine.
The US screws up plenty. But our past will look like a children’s tea party if Trump gets back in the WH.
The State Board of Elections in the release said the majority of those stripped from the rolls were deemed ineligible to be registered because they had moved within the state and did not register their new address, or because they did not participate in the past two federal elections, prompting an inactive status.
(bolding mine)
I wasn’t aware that you were required to vote in order to maintain your eligibility to do so. While I do make every effort to vote when I can, I can see where someone would , for whatever reason, choose not to vote and then decide to vote only to find out that they were removed from the voter roll.
Of course, NC (or more precisely, the GOP-run election board) has a history of doing everything they can to disenfranchise, either literally or effectively, what they consider “undesirables” (read, possible Democratic voters). Maybe I should double-check to make sure they haven’t found some excuse to remove me from the voter rolls.
They can’t; they are too close to the border and militarily weak. A fascist takeover would result in Canada being swiftly conquered and the population exterminated as evil “liberals”. Or just nuked.
Same goes for Mexico, but with a higher likelihood of going straight to the nukes. Just ask yourself “What would Hitler have done if he started WWII with nukes and a bigger army than all of Europe combined”, and you have a good model for how a fascist America will act.
If you plan on voting in the upcoming election, I would encourage you to do so. Where I am, it is really easy. You can do it in about 3 minutes online. Definitely check!
We already casually support the genocide of the Palestinian people and to suggest that maybe we stop is a fringe idea in America. That’s just one of the many horrific things we do that would stop if we collapse.
I’d say this is functionally and morally no different to saying “Trump winning in November is the best outcome as he gonna stick to the libs and send all the immigrants home”
You just don’t see things getting even worse if the U.S. collapses and neither Russia nor China are blocked in any way, do you?
This isn’t a case of bad, then good if the collapse happens under Trump-this is a case of bad, then worse.
Just want to say I’ve been feeling the same way as the OP. There’s going to be violence no matter who wins. Well actually there already is plenty of violence but it’s going to be everywhere in a month or so. Dreading it.
