I want to express my thanks to the staff for permitting me to post this.
CW: Suicide.
In this time of great need in the LGBTQ community, I have decided to become a fundraiser for The Trevor Project.
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth. It works to save young lives by providing support through free and confidential suicide prevention and crisis intervention programs on platforms where young people spend their time: a 24/7 phone lifeline, chat, text, and soon-to-come integrations with social media platforms. The Trevor Project also runs TrevorSpace, the world’s largest safe space networking site for LGBTQ youth, and operates innovative education, research, and advocacy programs.
Suicide is the 2nd-leading cause of death among all young people. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth are more than 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. LGBTQ youth from highly rejecting families are more than 8 times more likely to attempt suicide than youth from accepting families. Up to 50 percent of all trans people have made a suicide attempt - most before the age of 25. The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 in the U.S. seriously consider suicide each year and could benefit from its services.
Just about everyone in the United States knows an LGBTQ person. And odds are, you probably even like them. We must work to alleviate the social stigma associated with being LGBTQ and provide comfort and support to young people struggling from the weight of society. We have made large inroads in making America a more open and affirming place, but I am personally alarmed at the rash of anti-LGBTQ laws being signed in several states and am deeply concerned that our LGBTQ youth are seeing these and running out of hope.
