I am looking for an article written by Pat Metheny on Kenny G

There was an article, a very cold and viscious one I might add, about Kenny G written by Pat Metheny around June of this year, that a friend of mine is searching for. It was originally linked to in this thread:

but it no longer seems to be there. Anyone know of this article and whereabouts I might find it?

Thanks in advance.

Pat Metheny Weighs In On Kenny G

I can’t find any reason to disagree with any of the opinions stated by Pat Metheny. Kenny G and his music pale in comparison to so many other lesser known artists. Some people enjoy and buy his music, but in comparison, some peoople enjoy and buy the singing bass wall plaques too.

Fletch, I couldn’t say it better.

I am by no means an expert on jazz, but if Metheny’s comments are vicious, they are also entirely accurate. I’d say that KG is no better than Yanni on a sax, but then Manny might have to move this to The Pit.

Columnist Sandra Tsing Loh had a humorous take on Kenny G in this episode of the radio show Marketplace. Her husband is a jazz musician. She quotes the Metheny article.

LOL!! That’s hilarious, considering for the holidays my sister just bought my dad one of those singing bass.

Perderabo thanks a lot! That’s-a-what-I-was-lookin-for.

And just to put in my $.02 on the subject, I agree with everything Pat said about KG’s musicianship and ability to play, BUT, was the article necessary? Why get angry? Wouldn’t it be more worthy of respect to just laugh at it the way we laugh at teen idols?

I didn’t see any anger from Pat Metheny until he arrived at the Louis Armstrong issue. My take on Pats statements were dismay about the success of a fair to almost middling performer while there are more deserving performers who should be getting the attention.

While I was in the service a fellow shipmate bought a Kenny G compact disc. He would put the disc in the stereo in a common area and set in on “loop”. All day, every day, hour upon hour, Kenny G. The person that bought the compact disc was the senior most person and the music reminded him of his wife (sasquatch wannabe) and ignored our cries of anguish. Day after day, the same compact disc and Kenny G, hour upon hour, Kenny G.

We came upon a holiday Sunday and the shotgun and the clay pigeon thrower were brought out. We took turns blasting the clay pigeons out of the air, the clay pigeons were uniformly black with the tops painted orange. All of a sudden, out of no where comes this pigeon that is all silvery and rainbow like, it gracefully arcs through the air. Blam!! Blam!! Blam!! Three direct hits on the mutant silvery rainbow like pigeon, it hit the water and disappeared.

No more Kenny G.

I feel Pat’s comments were too harsh, because I’ve never heard anyone hint that Kenny G plays jazz. He plays pop music, and compared to other pop “musicians,” (have you listened to the crap that gets played on pop radio stations?), Kenny G is right there with them. His is just different in that it’s instrumental pop instead of vocal.

What if you compared his to Dionne Warwick’s music? Kenny fits right in.

I wasn’t aware that he had done an overdub of a Satchmo song, and that may be offensive to jazz lovers. But he’s making music that his audience will buy. I doubt too many of the people who know who Pat Metheny is would even consider buying a Kenny G album anyway, so the calls for a boycott don’t mean much.
