I am looking for a phone that can work over the internet. The phone should be cordless so that I can work in any room in the house. It should ideally have a handset that looks like a phone and allows me to initiate/dial a call from the room I am in without having to be near or touch the computer. The phone should ring when I have it with me a room so that I don’t have to hold it or wear it all the time, and it should allow me to pick it up and answer it.
In short, it should work exactly like the cordless phone I have now, but the phone service should go through the internet instead of over the phone lines.
I have not been able to find a phone that has all of these features. Does anyone know if one exists? If so, brand and product names would be appreciated. If not, what is my best option to get close to my ideal?
I use Magic Jack for my home phone and use a standard cordless phone. In fact, I have the Magic Jack device plugged into a wall jack and my 3 phone set up (one base unit, 2 remote units) plugged into other phone jacks throughout my house. I can make or receive calls from any phone in the house and don’t need to be near my computer. All 3 phones work everywhere in my place. It’s not unusual for me to finish a call and find myself near another phone and have to walk across the house to place the phone back in the charging unit. This setup will work with any internet phone service including Vonage or Comcast.
I have one o these, and it does everything you mention. However, I have no clue what’s up with that price - I know I didn’t pay more than about $120 for it, and I wouldn’t buy another one at $499. It’s not worth it.
Magic Jack looks even cooler though. racer72, will it work with Skype? It’s hard to tell what you need for it looking at the web site.
