And wasn’t it argued at the time that environmental regulation and ridiculously high union wages would drive jobs overseas?
And did you care?
Or was your attitude then pretty much the same as it is now, which is that neither would be a problem as long as government fulfilled its proper role and simply forbade American companies to utilize overseas employees and manufacturing?
There’s simply no problem that can’t be solved though government force and the sacrifice of our freedoms, is there?
I know I sure miss the freedom to choke to death on another peasouper. If only we could return to the halcyon days before the Clean Air Act 1956. I sure would like another repeat of the smog of 1952! Only 4000 people died over the course of a couple of days from respiratory problems. We sure were free back then though!
I agree. I believe the prescription involves a hefty dose of State Dept sabre rattling, combined with a couple more unfunded and unnecessary wars
Got to make an example of those lesser-than-US countries. Maybe take out a few of their leaders… to paraphrase Stewie, nothing says “obey me” like a bloody head on a pike.
Not only were we freer, things were better then. You only have to look around to see it. Kids didn’t run around with their pants half way down their asses, dagnammit. There was no birth out of wedlock either. None.
China has the growth of unions. People tolerate exploitation for just so long. They fight back. Now they move to Vietnam. Eventually Nam will unionize. The only power workers have against companies is collective. They do not need you. They need all of the workers though.
If you think America should have all the power in the ownership class, you will be pleased with the present trends. But Chinese workers work for 64 cents an hour. Of course that should be what we should shoot for here, isn’t it? Whatever they offer, is what you should complacently take.
We should be free to take orders from the Corporations. What kind of freedom is that? Collective power got you all the benefits you enjoy in America. It got safer working conditions and healthcare. It got vacations and the power to fight abusive bosses.
The unions were not government force. They were the force of the workers. I know you hate the government, but do you hate workers trying to defend themselves too?
I have it on *very good authority *that a chorus of angels heralded my mother’s birth in '57, *because *she would eventually have a daughter of such blinding [del]arrogance[/del] intelligence that the whole world would tremble. So there you go, wrong again.
