Will I lose all my money? Does anybody have any tips? Will I look stupid if I bring card with the hand rankings?
If you bring that card with you, you are just asking to be mocked. My friends were merciless when I played Texas Hold’Em for the frist time. I lost all my money, too.
Good luck!
If they don’t know that your clueless, don’t tell them. usually you will find out easily enough what wins by who is taking the pot. Dont bluff unless you have a pair. dont call when all you have is two 3’s on the turn(assuming you’re playing texas hold 'em). Just remember the most common winnings- full house(trips and a pair) flush(all 1 suit) straight(consecutive-suit doesnt matter) three of a kind(aka trips) 2 pair, then a pair.
WHy don’t you learn first?
There is not much money involved so I figured it might be a good way to learn.
Don’t complain if the “lesson” is too expensive.
Do you know what type of poker you are playing? Is it hold em? If so I would assume you are playing limit, meaning that on each betting round you are limited to one amount that you can bet. So, for example, $1/$2 means that on the first two rounds you can bet or raise one, on the last two rounds you can bet or raise $2. Get some more info and I would be happy to help.
Well, that’s fine, especially if you play with friends. In any case, set a limit on your losses and stick to it.
Poker is unusual in that nobody minds playing with a beginner (as long as they don’t hold the game up). After all, the chances are they will win your money.
Ummm…just how well do you know the people you will be playing with?
How long have you known them?
I’m just a trifle concerned, here…
Yes.
Invite me.
Yes. Take a minute and memorize the hand rankings. It’s not that complicated.
For serious tips (assuming you’re playing hold 'em), stick to premium hands (pocket pairs, AK-AT). Be aware of the power of position. The closer you are to the button the better position you’re in. Pay attention to what the other players are doing, but don’t waste your time trying to pick up some magical “tell” because that pretty much doesn’t happen outside the movies. Don’t chase draws (hands where you need a card to come up to make your hand, i.e. four to the straight or flush). Don’t drink (or keep it to a minimum).
So how’d it go?
Why would you assume that? I’ve never played limit in private games. Besides, I think limit is way harder than no-limit.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up ahead. I’ve seen it happen many times. Newbie joins table. Plays for shit. Wins game. Did you see Celebrity Poker with Colin Quinn? Oh. My. God. That was some of the worst poker I’ve ever seen played. Colin is the textbook example of a calling station. Yet, he somehow always managed to catch two pair or trips on the flop. Bastard.
Tell me about it. I was getting seriously angry at the whole Colin Quinn debacle.
