I am [shocked to find out that JC Penny is using fake prices and meaningless discounts!]

Are you saying that the value of the Apple brand is no greater than the value of another brand?
Doesn’t the value of the brand allow them to raise prices above those of similar products without the brand?

No, just that most companies set their prices to the maximum price they can without alienating their customer base. The exact price is different for every brand and every product, but the goal is the same, maximizing profits. Having a strong brand doesn’t eliminate the need to price correctly, it just sets the level at a different point.

I can’t add anything to what I’ve already said, except to say that this strikes me as a case of understanding the situation perfectly while missing the whole point.

Yes, you are exactly right, but you are blithely dismissing the variance in how those price points are set for Apple vs. Samsung/Acer and Target vs. Prada and Kia vs. Koenigsegg - and I would maintain that that “how” is much more important to the equation than the simple factors of the version you present.
