I ca’t believe no-one’s mentioned Escape To Victory yet. Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone AND Pele all in one film - what more can you want?!
I’ll second Shaolin Soccer. I’m not even a fan of soccer and I loved that movie.
Iron Mooch
It’s good but not great. It’s good for a laugh, but not something that will stick in your head for a long time.
:smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack:
I can’t believe i forgot it!
the greatest football film of all time!
It’s simply called Victory in the US
IMHO, way better than “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” At least there was some signs of internal and external conflict in “Beckham” as opposed to “Greek Wedding” where all they did was make allusions to it but then it all goes really well. Of course, the protagonists are not quite the same age, so that could have something to do with it. The more I think about “Greek Wedding” the more upset I get, so I’m going to stop.
I have not seen many ads for “Beckham”. I have heard that “Beckham” was to the UK what “Greek Wedding” was in the US.
Apparently Kiera Knightly was Padme’s stand-in before Lucas revealed that the real Padme was the handmaiden (which was kind of obvious because we know what Natalie Portman looks like.) What surprises me is how young Kiera is.
I totally agree. I enjoy hearing the accent and all, but I’m sick of hearing someone with a British accent introducing British films or making them appear like they are either more cultured or sinister.
I wonder if American films are introduced by American-accented announcers in Europe.
Of course, and it’s always that gravelly-voiced guy - whassisname?
Yeah, they don’t redub them.
Is this the same movie that has Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as the football coach? Irish guy with the big lips?
I haven’t seen Bend it Like Beckham, but I can tell you that Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is the best looking man I’ve seen in a movie in years…and I say this as a Kinsey 4.5.
Yeah, keep doing this and you might start thinking there’s a film industry outside of Hollywood.
Well of course they do. And always by that man who sounds like he’s been gargling with tar. And he always makes it sound like everything is far more gripping, serious and immense than it actually is.
Bend It Like Beckham is such a fun movie! Saw it yesterday.
I’m not a footie fan, and I saw it twice. It’s funny, and you can tell your mum to go to it with it with her friends.
Besides, the old Indian ladies stole the picture (I won’t spoil it).
It’s a good date flick.
I second the recommendation for Fever Pitch. Though it does have a rather annoying romance theme (virtually nonexistent in the far superior book), it is still an enjoyable film which manages to convey what a football club means to its supporters. And I say this as someone who loathes Arsenal
I hated When Saturday Comes though. Too predictable to be interesting, and the lead character was a prick.
There is a relatively recent soccer movie called The Mean Meachine, which looks like a British remake of The Longest Yard, the classic football movie. It is about a soccer game between prison inmates and their guards, and it stars Vinnie Jones and Jason Statham from Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. It is also produced by some of the people who produced those two Guy Ritchie films.
I’m not sure if this ever played in theaters, but I just saw it on the shelf at Blockbuster.
