I Am So Sick Of These 'Bend It Like Beckham' Ads!

Has anyone seen this movie? Is it worth all this hype?

Thanks

No, I haven’t seen it, but that’s never stopped me before…

The Full Monty has ruined film, as did “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.”

“This year’s The Full Monty!” Ugh, no thanks. Full Monty was very good, but it’s now a genre of movie in and of itself.

Bastards.

I wonder if I would like it, since I loathe watching soccer.

its not a bad film - definitely falls within the “chick flick” catergory though.

i only watched it because a lot of it is filmed in twickenham (which is pretty much my home town).

I don’t doubt that it’s good. But it seems very white-people good, Indian star notwithstanding.

No, I don’t know what “white-people good” means.

Cute Indian girl + soccer. How can it not be good?

It’s great, but it’s definately a chick flick.

Did you know that Keira Knightley had a minor role in The Phantom Menace - as Padmé’s handmaiden.

What does it mean in soccer parlance to “bend it?”

Like or unlike Beckham?

I saw the ads on IMdB. Kinda gives me a funny feeling. Damn… ads!

To “Bend it” in soccer means to kick the ball with a sidespin on it so it curves, just like a curveball in baseball. Good soccer players can make a ball curve quite a bit. For obvious reasons, it’s quite a weapon if you’re trying to score a goal or feed a nifty pass. David Beckham is very good at it.

I love playing soccer, so the more soccer movies there are, the better, I think; and I’m going to see this one soon. The only soccer movies I ever had growing up were the one with Rodney Dangerfield coaching a girls’ soccer team and *The Big Green[/].

Does anyone know of any good soccer movies; ones that actually express the feeling of how great a game it is? I’m from and live in the US, so I’m no doubt deprived.

And by soccer, I mean football.

It’s an O.K. film, but I found myself reacting to it rather like I did to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. (In fact, I have been mentally referring to Bend It Like Beckham as My Big Fat Indian Family.) A lot of the problems of the girl in Bend It Like Beckham could have been quickly solved, just like the problems in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, if the girl had had the courage at the beginning to tell her family to get off her back.

Here’s Beckham bending it (to send England into the World Cup):

Thanks, RickJay.

one energy, I recommend to you the Chinese film Shaolin Soccer, which is ridiculous, hilarious, and about soccer.

I’ve seen exactly one ad for it, in the theater. However,

seems to sum it up for me.

I loved it, and i’m male and straight.
(BTW, Troy, it is playing at the Stonestown theater and Embarcedaro one)

There is surprisingly little out there.

Fever Pitch is worth a look - its probably one to watch with a girlfriend since it has chick flick romancy elements.

The book is far, far superior though and a MUST read for any football fan (particularly an Arsenal fan like me) as it does sum up the importance of the game to the fans etc, my girlfriend is currently reading it in an effort to understand why i did this a week or so ago.

When Saturday Comes is also worth a look if you can put up with the “t’is tuff up north” mood.

And if you can track it down The Arsenal Stadium Mystery is bloody brilliant.

The movie is simply fabulous .Saw it last year ( August)

Is that a common marketing ploy in the US? This year’s Full Monty? Do they do that to every British comedy is something?

By the way - i really enjoyed the film too. Definately worth watching, although i wouldn’t say it has much in common with the above mentioned film.

No, the marketing ploy is using actors with British accents. SOmetimes I think half the U.S. population are Anglophiles. No offense meant to anyone, but I am soooo sick of Celtic/Irish/Scottish/Welsh/English culture being played up.
Gee. What’re the odds I won’t be caled ou to explain that statement? :dubious:
