I Am Somewhat Upset Over Two Things (Miss America related)

I like it when they admit that “not being a racist shitstain” is a thing only liberals do.

Do you even grasp that socialism exists outside the borders of duhmerica; or are you that brainwashed into believing that the whole planet consists of liberals and conservatives? :smack::smack::smack:

This is highly amusing. You are perfectly demonstrating “Self-righteous+internationally clueless+completely obtuse” in every post you write by ignoring the point that a significant portion of this board either lives outside the US or has travelled widely outside the US (including many non-US born members), and that even the US ones are well-versed in historical and geopolitical matters. Perhaps if you’d stop with the “duhmerica” stuff and actually read what people are writing you’d be able to converse at a level above that of an eight-year-old.

Unless of course you’ve just admitted to trolling, in which case buh-bye.

I’m at a loss as to how supposedly-intelligent posters can make jokes based on race and then claim they weren’t racist. Huh? So those jokes would work equally well if they were about a blonde whose origins lie somewhere in Europe? Well, no. Her parents are Indian, so she must work in a call centre or tech support, ha ha!

I apologize again for heusos for insulting Americans and making light of racial sensitivity. He’s from somewhere in which racism is highly normal and unquestioned, and obviously growing up in such a stifling and harmful environment harmed his brain. He knows that despite the US’s occasional immorality regarding race, it still does better than the podunk village in which he grew up, and his jealousy of that clouds his thinking when he decides to exercise it.

I find Miss america 10/10 hot. way she speaks, body and face also.
Just wanted to share this kick ass song featuring Bipasha with everyone…

The joke or the poster?

It’s pretty easy (for me) to believe that someone can tell a racist joke without holding racist attitudes / treating people different based on race.

Yeah, me too. I can see a joke as making fun of the stereotype, not affirming it.

Please point to how the stereotype is being made fun of when it is repeated without any criticism, and when those effected by the stereotype complain, they are told to shut up.

Sorry, but you don’t get to claim to be non-racist and make jokes like Shodan and John Mace were and not be called on it. If you repeat racist jokes, you don’t get to wave it away with “Oh, but I’m better, I don’t MEAN it.”

Sorry for the unclear phrasing; I meant the jokes, not the posters.

Those jokes were posted with no changes or even emoticons to signify that they were attempting to subvert the joke. Neither of them has claimed that was their reason, either.

In general they (esp John Mace) don’t come across as racist to me, so I’m surprised.

Not to pick on any one person, but I really don’t understand this reaction. She WON the thing. How does the bitching of a small minority of people trump the honor of actually WINNING the damn thing? Sour grapes is what the losers get because the winner goes home with the wine!

I see this all the time. We’ve made huge strides in eliminating both maternal and child deaths during childbirth in the past century, as well as infant mortality in general. But when you put those facts on the same page with a story about some parent who neglected their kid to play video games and the kid died, some people wail that there’s no hope for humanity. Are you kidding? We’ve taken hundreds of steps forward for each step we take back. That doesn’t mean the step backwards should be ignored, but can we at least temper our sorrow over this death with some joy over the many lives which did not end prematurely as they would have a short while ago?

Worldwide life expectancy is skyrocketing. Skyrockets are skyrocketing. A couple of generations ago charismatic madmen controlled countries which were world powers and exterminated their opponents with near impunity. Now such kinds of events are newsworthy because of their relative rarity.

There’s a forest here, and this kind of attitude is like focusing on the patch of ground that has weeds growing instead of trees. I don’t really understand it.

Enjoy,
Steven

If you were a mother whose infant died, you might be a bit less excited about all the infants who survived. I do think “we’re not wanted” is a bit much, though.

Anaamika, you have always impressed me on this board with your wit, intelligence and unique perspective. I think many people around here feel the same way. So, you have people here who want you to be here.

The voices of the crazy hatefilled people who now use Twitter and the Blogosphere to promulgate their ideas will never be stilled, but they don’t control things in the same way as they used to. And, it was the brave women and men of color who made that change happen in the USA. Yes, they had allies and good ones in the white people who supported them, but it was their struggle and we have come quite a long way from 1963, haven’t we?

I personally can’t apologize for someone else being hurtful, but I can certainly sympathize. Life is way too short to spend it mired in hatred and fear of ‘The Other’. If anyone cares about the opinion of a middle-aged white guy who lives in the woods, I think the new Miss America is quite lovely.

This is going to sound pedantic, but I think the word ‘racist’ may be being applied too broadly here. Many of these jokes and attempted witticisms are actually examples of a more generalized kind of bigotry instead. I see racism as a subset of bigotry where there is an underlying belief that the other race is inherently inferior to one’s own. The presumption that one’s cultural identity is tied to stereotypes that may or may not be negative is, nevertheless, a bigoted position.

So, by definition, any jokes that assign culturally stereotypical characteristics to a person will be bigoted. Whether they are actually funny is dependent upon the satirical nature of the joke. In other words, in many cases, the joke is not about the supposed object of the joke but instead is about the character who is relating the story. In those cases, the joke may be satirical.

To add insult to injury, they just weren’t funny.

Racist has more than one meaning. If you mean that they rely on racial stereotypes to work, then, yes, the jokes are racist. But if you think racist requires some attempt at discriminating against people, then these jokes were not racist. The context surrounding them makes it clear they are making fun of the racists.

I don’t see why you would need a smiley. There’s no joke there if they are legitimately discriminatory. Sure, it works on Twitter, where they might actually be talking to other racists, but not in a thread denouncing how racist the whole thing is. Saying racist things in earnest to non-racist people doesn’t work as a joke–unless the people involved are trolls. But past history does not lead me to believe this is the case.

They are just being edgy comedians. Do you realize how much of racial-based comedy could not exist if we couldn’t do this type of joke? I’d say it’s the bread and butter of at least half the comics out there.

None of the comics I like would do that kind of job unless they were if that race themselves.

The jokes were acting as if all Indian people worked in IT and call centres, and weren’t very good at it either.

If you genuinely don’t think that’s discriminatory, then make those jokes in real life sometime. Make sure to do it in front of an Indian friend who’d just been talking about racists disliking the result. Don’t introduce the joke in any way - just dump it in there. Then, when your Indian friend gets upset and some of your other friends are shocked, tell them not to be silly, it was only a joke.

Apart from “real life” that’s exactly what’s happened here.
