My favorite sunglasses for most sunny to cloudy conditions have been Ray Ban Ambermatics, a yellow/gold photochomic lens that darkens in sunlight, but enhances color-contrast and depth perception. Many people associate these lenses with shooters and pilots, both of which I began in the 1970’s.
I probably purchased my last pair around 1982 or so, and shortly after that, Ray Ban discontinued their production. Pity the person that drops or scratches the only pair they have; the only source since then has been vintage shops and Ebay. I have seen them sell for as much as $400 at auction because of their rarity. I haven’t looked at a pair for a year, maybe, but it’s pretty recent that they’re still scarce.
That’s all over - for now. Since I’m going to get new glasses tomorrow, I was researching new frames, and found a miracle online. For RB’s 75th anniversary, they’ve put out a [&promotion_id=100&technology=35"]limited edition](http://www.ray-ban.com/usa/sunglasses/?cm_mmc=google-semsearch-_-brand-exact-_-ray-ban-exact-_-[ray+ban) of these most popular and iconic sunglasses for an unknown period of time.
I’ve asked opticians over the years about creating such a lens, but they’ve all said it can’t be done. No one makes yellow blanks, or the coating won’t work, etc.
I have a couple of regular G-15 lens frames, B-15’s, a mirrored double gradient for skiing - that they don’t make anymore either - and more. Maybe 14 or so different frame/lens combos depending on my mood or the conditions expected.
Plus my old Porsche Design frames with the interchangeable lenses! I kept Sunglass Hut in business for years!
Well, I am a happy camper. I’m ordering about a dozen pair; some for backups, some for gifts.
If you have never experienced the view that this lens offers, I urge you to head over to your nearest Sunglass Hut or similar store and try them out!
