I Bought An EVP Device

…off of Amazon, in fact. (EVP stands for ‘electronic voice phenomenon’, in case you don’t know. It’s used by ghost hunters.)

Anyways, my father died 10 years ago, this year. And my mother 15 years before that. I was very close to both of them. And I seemed to notice phenomenon shortly after my father’s death, that seemed ghostly. (Keep in mind I am rather skeptical, even nonbelieving, when it comes to an afterlife.)

Yeah, I would be sleeping in bed, late for an appointment. And I would hear my father’s voice coming from his bedroom telling me to get my ass out of bed. Now my father would do that, if he were still around (my father was only late for work one time in his life–I’m serious). Okay, sounds like a waking dream, you would say. But one time I was late, and I was fully awake. And I heard his voice coming from the master bedroom. I immediately ran to the room. The TV was on. And I rewound the satellite signal to recapture the sound, reasoning it was just something on TV. It wasn’t.

Anyways, I have to tell you more. I am going to use it on All Souls’ Eve. That is the day, the Roman Catholic Church teaches, souls are temporarily released from the bounds in Purgatory, and presumably elsewhere, I would think. It is actually the day following Hallowe’en and All Saints’ Day. And I am going to use it (the EVP) at the solar midnight. Also known as sundial time, I guess (though you realize it continues after sunset). Adjusting for Daylight Savings Time, along with the deviation from mean standard time, I estimate that will be around 1:30AM Eastern Standard Time.

Oh, and funny story, about All Souls’ Eve. My maternal grandmother (who died in 1971, when I was 3), had a horrible fear about All Souls’ Eve. Apparently, my mother recalled, it was for the above reason. (As my mother jokingly pointed out once, she wasn’t afraid of the saints, just the souls LOL.) Anyways, my mother, or her sister (otherwise known as my aunt), had to stay with her, in her home near Hamtramck, MI (her husband, tragically died in 1963, 5 years before I was born). Then one year, my mother called up my grandmother, and said she was sorry. She was busy, so she didn’t get the opportunity to stay with her that year. My grandmother reacted in shock. You mean the day already came and went, she exclaimed. Kind of funny, I guess.

Anyways, my last question. I am going to do it All Souls’ Eve as I said. Does anyone want me to post what happens here? Tell me now, if you do. Because the day, or rather I should say eve, is fast approaching.

Isn’t the day following Halloween and All Saints’ Day, commonly called All Souls’ Day, not Eve?

@D_Anconia The day following Hallowe’en (or All Saints’ Eve) is All Souls’ Eve. The day following All Saints’ Day (November 1st), is All Souls’ Day. I was perhaps a little vague on this too, I apologize  .

How does this EVP device differ from, say, recording sound on a smartphone?

@hogarth I haven’t even opened the box yet  .

I suggest buying a dog: they are much better than EVPs detecting ghosts, they have more and more acute senses. And if they don’t detect nothing at least they keep you company and force you to go out for a walk once a day. They are also a great conversation starter when walking them, and nobody will ever say they don’t believe they exist.

Have you ever heard the term “auditory pareidolia”?
edited to add-I just checked on Amazon Prime, and I didn’t realize how much more you can charge for a voice recorder if you claim it also records ghost voices.

Yes, I would be very disappointed if you did not come back here and post what happened @Jim_B .

I read the thread title as “I Bought An EMP Device”.

Which, according to certain sources, might also be useful if you’ve got ghosts about.

I think there may be some confusion here. “Eve” means (in this context) the day before.

“Halloween” is a contraction of “All Hallows Eve”, so it’s the day before “All Saints’ Day”, also known as All Hallows’ Day or Hallowmas.

" All Souls’ Day" is marked on 2nd November (or the 3rd if the 2nd is a Sunday), directly following All Saints’ Day, and is an opportunity for Roman Catholics and Anglo-Catholic churches to commemorate the faithful departed.

Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to them each year has been a Christian tradition since the 4th century AD. In 837AD, Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to remember all the saints, changed its name to Feast of All Saints and changed the date to 1st November.

So:
Halloween - 31st October
All Saints’ Day/All Hallows’ Day/Hallowmas - 1st November
All Souls’ Day - 2nd November.

There is a strong connection between Halloween and the festival of Samhain, meaning Summer’s End, which was supposedly the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest, and magical things could happen.

It has, of course, evolved into one of the great retail festivals, along with Christmas and Easter.

I don’t know-- I did a quick Amazon search and found a “Ghost Box Scanner with Spirit Box and EVP Recorder”-- three things in one for less than $100 ($99.99). Seems like a pretty good deal.

It also gets AM/FM, which is a bonus fourth thing. You can listen to your favorite music or talk show in between ghost hunting. And, it’s an Amazon’s Choice selection, so it has to be quality.

Another suggesting for a pet, does not have to be a dog. I had what I assume to be an orb of light floating in my bedroom one day, though I could not see it directly, but just the glow against the walls as it moved through the bedroom, though my cat was staring at exactly where it would be in 3d space. This is just one of many assists she gave me.

The other thing is a pet would be there for you pretty much all the time, and you would not have to guess a day based on some religious rite. Perhaps a pet that your dad would enjoy.

I definitely want to hear about what happens!

So you bought it, but you don’t have a clue what it is or how it works?

The unbeliever is angering the spirits!

I am highly skeptical that the Catholic Church teaches that souls are “temporarily released” from Purgatory on a certain day, but I’m willing to be educated.

My gf (raised catholic, has found atheism) has told me crazy shit she was taught by the nuns in grade school. Things about dead babies in purgatory because of reasons.

I guess there are many values for a phrase like “The Catholic Church teaches…” but I was thinking of the Magisterium.

Doesn’t the RCC have enough issues without some misinformation like this being attributed to them?

I would love to see a cite for this one also.

If you don’t know what a ghost is, how can you “scan” for it? How can you possible calibrate such a device?
