I can has Neanderthal genes?

Heavy brow ridges are one of those things guys can pull off, but women can’t. :frowning:

True 'dat. :-\

Silly Cro-Magnon. To Neanderthals, fat is hot.

Okay, so if I saw one on the street, wearing a suit I wouldn’t be able to tell they weren’t… black? White? Asian? What ethnicity would they most closely resemble?

No. They used to be called that maybe 20-30 years ago, but until this data, must of the data we got since then showed no interbreeding.

I think we’re already there.

If anyone is interested, NPR is discussing this now on Science Friday.

We don’t know. Odds are they had light-ish skin, but that’s just a guess based on the fact they lived mostly in the north. Artist renditions tend to make them look like heavy set Caucasians with large noses and heavy brow ridges.

NatGeo had an article on this.

Here is a link showing some of the suggested versions of what a Neanderthal female might have looked like:

You know what would be really funny? The 1-4% of genes that non-Africans inherited from Neanderthals were the ones for pale skin. I can foresee a lot of racist jokes about racists.

It’s not completely crazy–pale skin is adaptive at high latitudes. And adaptive genes are the ones most likely to persist in a population.

Talk about being stuck between a cave and a dark place…

Perhaps even more interesting is that this study suggests two areas of interbreeding, one of which did not have any Neanderthals, and so the interbreeding would be with an even more distant ancestor-- some form of H. erectus.

Hey, baby. How you doin’?

This one is more of a split difference between the Homos Erectus and Sapien.

Is that a stick in your hand, or are you just an Erectus?

OK, I got a nice little snippet from the NPR program. Apparently, the researchers found 12 areas in non-African modern humans that show very deep ancestry (ie, before the out of Africa event) that were not seen in African populations. When they looked at the same spot in the Neanderthal genome, 10 of those areas matched the Neanderthals. That’s pretty compelling evidence for interbreeding.

They should have made the two specimens the same height. Some populations of Erectus were very tall.

When I saw the Erectoid (haha) in the picture I just wanted to scream KKKKHHHAAAANNNN!!!

Here for whomever is interested a good link of a close up reconstruction of a Neanderthal dude.

Link.

Nah. That’s just Liam Neesan after a 3-day bender.

You gotta admit it looks a bit like him!

Neanderthals were very heavily muscled, and would have looked like body builders.

The male from the link has that large nose. How would they know their nose is that large? Isn’t nose mostly cartilage, not usually becoming fossilized?

Yeah it really does, like someone kicked his ass, but since the GHB is starting to wear off, he is going to extract his revenge. Liam Neaderthalis in theaters soon, rated R.

The size of the nasal opening and the slope of the bone where the nose begins.
