Johnny cash did a re-make of Nine Inch Nails song Hurt!
I kind of like it.
In the video he looks so old and sad and then they show pictures of him younger.
He’s sitting in this chair singing and his wife looking over his shoulder all sad looking.
Wow!
I haven’t gotten to see the video, but they have been playing the song fairly regularly on my local alternative station. It’s haunting.
When you watch the video it makes the song sound like an Indian chant.
It’s weird.
I almost cried seeing him like that. He always seemed like such a big strong man.
The only place I saw the video was , of all places, CNBC a week ago.
I wish I had my VCR cued.
Cash has done quite a few covers of modern rock, Soundgardens “Rusty Cage” is another highlight.
Don’t forget his version of “Personal Jesus”. Great stuff.
A couple months ago I saw Richard Thompson live and at one point in the show he broke a string, so to fill time while he fixed it, he had the audience singing along to some obscure song (from his “Thousand Years of Popular Music” I assume) about some nasty character who was about to be hanged.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when on a whim I grabbed a copy Johnny Cash’s “American IV”, partly because I saw the song “Tear Stained Letter” and thought maybe he was covering Thompson’s version. (I had forgotten JC had his own song with the same title). Imagine my surprise when the track “Sam Hall” starts playing. It was the same song RT had everyone singing along to! What a hoot…
My name it is Sam Hall, and I hate you one and all
I hate you one and all, damn your eyes!
I thought this was going to be a Mamas and Papas thread.
The first time I heard the song, I caught it about halfway threw and I didn’t think it really worked. By the end of the song, I found it to be the most depressing, powerful song I’d heard in a long time.
After watching the video…damn! Great, great stuff.
One question, though…where’s the footage from Christ being Cruicified from?
That’s a great song with an even better video. The first time I saw it (weeks ago, I might add) I was hooked.
My wife was watching one of those video channels a few weeks ago and it came on. I was so very impressed.
I always thought Johnny Cash was the man, but this just brought out such reflection on his life and the song was really good …
Well, what can I say?
Thank you, Kricket and Otto. That was amazing.
It was found under the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was remastered just for the video.

Can anyone say whether this is playing more often on MTV or VH1? I don’t watch either but am willing to surf one more regularly just to catch this…
My wife and I saw it on VH1’s “Insomniac Music Theater,” or whatever it’s called, that runs after midnight.
Took me a few seconds to figure out what it was, but then my jaw dropped. Holy crap. As if Johnny Cash wasn’t already a living legend… how much more intensely amazing can this guy get?
See, I’m the type of person who will listen to just about anything under the sun, and my husband knows I like NIN. He has heard me play that song a few times and knows it’s one of my favorites.
Well, I was making dinner the other night when he yelled for me to hurry up into the living room.
Like Cervaise my jaw dropped!
I played the video from the link a few times today and my kids think it’s creepy but cool.
When I saw it the first time was on CMT. I’m sure it will be on there in the top ten or whatever they do around 5pm or so. I’m sure someone who pays a bit more attention to detail will be along to clear that up.
It’s been a while since I have had a song make me react this way. And I’m not even sure what it is?
Is it the meaning of the song? Is it that he put it to video of parts of his life? Is it cause a country legend found a bit of himself in an alternative song?
My jaw dropped when I saw it for the first time, too. It also gave me goosebumps. I don’t think I have ever had such a strong reaction to a song/video before.
What really clinches it for me is when he pours the wine out of the goblet and his hand is shaking so badly. It just makes him seem so frail and old.
His voice is just so haunting–you can his pain and regret so clearly.
I have seen it on VH1 quite a few times and also CMT, if you can sit through the 5-6 crappy videos in a row before getting to the good stuff.
His cover of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ song “The Mercy Seat” on Solitary Man is equally amazing and impressive. Johnny Cash is totally my dad.
I’ve noticed the video getting quite a bit of airplay on MTV2, for those who have access to it. I think I’ve cried every time I’ve seen it, especially after the flood footage when the song swells up. It’s also seeing June standing on the stairs looking at Johnny with the most complex expression on her face. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.
