Damn you escape artist, damn you two. Now I have to replace the fence again.
Have you tried frowning and wagging your finger while saying “Bad! Bad dog!” to the culprit(s)?
Have you tried Invisible Fence. I have three active dogs on five acres. They always found a way out somewhere. I installed a system that consists of a buried wire and a collar with a reciever on it if the dogs get whithin 10 feet of the fence it beeps loudly. If they get within 5 feet it shocks them. Neither system alone worked. Without the fence they just ran past the shock. Without the collar they just dug out. But now that I have both they get shocked for as long as they dig so they don’t do it for long. Had it for two months now not a single escape. Now they don’t go near the fence and they have the run of the property. We are all happier.
Thanks, I might try that. How do I make sure it is at a humane setting?
I tried it on myself first. Hurt like hell but no damage. My dogs are pretty stubborn. I had to put one of them on the highest setting the others are on the lowest. They never test it I don’t think any of them have been shocked more than twice. Once during training and once chasing a deer. It is really cool to watch. The whole property is fenced but we didn’t want the dogs to able to get to the guest house so the only barrier is the buried wire on one side of the property. Even at a full run chasing a deer or squirrel they stop in mid flight about 15 feet from the wire and sit down and bark.
There are relatively cheap systems for sale at local pet stores. They worked ok when we had a relatively small lot. Once we moved to the our current house on over five acres we had to upgrade to a professionally installed system. Our small lot system with 3 collars was about 300 bucks the new system was about 2500 bucks. It seems like alot of money but cosidering we live in a rural area where it is legal to shoot free roaming dogs we had to do it.
Off to MPSIMS with the mutt. That’ll teach 'im.
One note: Be careful about the dog’s fur. My poodle has very springy fur, and it actually kept the collar off the neck until I put longer prongs on.
From what I have discussed with vets they like this system. The owner isn’t there when the shock is given, so it doesn’t make the dog fear the owner. Since I don’t now squat about dogs, I’ll bow (owowowiooowow) out now.
We have a small fence type thing for our dogs. It’s more like a playpen. One of our dogs actaully figured out how to climb it…well we don’t use it anymore. It took us about a month of yelling at each other for leaving the dog out before we saw it happen. BTW I have it on video if anyone wants a 17mb .mov file.
I bought a bark zapper for my dog. To make sure the setting was humane, I tried it on my assistant. Does that make me a bad boss?
Heh. You should upload it to YouTube or Google Video.
There are a couple of problems with invisible fences. Some dogs are extremely prey driven and will take the hit when actively chasing and run right past the fenceline. Now they are outside the yard with no way back in.
Also, invisible fences don’t keep other dogs out, which could lead to some nasty confrontations.
If the OP wants advice on how to dogproof a fence I will be glad to help.
Now, if the “other dog” was reasonably smart at all, this could lead to some hilarious video… a live Tom and Jerry with the dog kind of thing…
Yes, thank you.
Maybe I should also look for a dumber breed
Joey P, I would also like to see that video.
Send me an email so I can reply to it, your’s isn’t in your profile.
Alright, YouTube, lets see if this works.
How cute
What type of dog is it? At first I thought it was a yorkie but it didn’t seem to have a very long coat.
A mini schnauzer, and she was a puppy at the time. You’ll have to forgive the quality, I was trying the video feature on a camera.
E-mail me, or respond in this thread with a description of the dogs, the fence, and what they are doing to get out. We’ll do a cost/benefit analysis.
What’s wrong with giving them a leash that lets them roam the yard but not get anywhere even if they dig out? Is the hole part of the objection, too? Or, my old neighbors had the dog clipped to a clothesline that ran between two trees. This gave him a mobility rectangle with the clothesline in the middle, and doubly as wide as the leash would stretch.
