Strange story. The father of one of my college roommates had bought a dozen or more cases back in the late 70’s convinced that they would be the next big collectible. He was a beer distributor, so storage wasn’t a problem. When the late 80’s came around and they were still pretty worthless as collectibles, he gave his son a case as a Christmas present. So, roughly a decade after it was brewed, I had a Billy Beer. It had kept pretty well (wasn’t rancid or anything), but it tasted absolutely horrid.

I worked for Ambassador Rawson (in Mali), who was the ambassador to Rwanda, and who actually was the person who refused to acknowledge that there was a brewing disaster in the country. Once the violence began, it was too late for American intercession to prevent it. African forces finally arrived and stopped the mayhem. Rawson was the failure point and should have been terminated for his lack of insight or action.

To be sure, there were fuck-ups from every corner, and many willful lies from people who knew what was going on. But while it may have been too late to prevent it entirely, the Clinton administration basically let it run its course once they were aware of the magnitude of the situation (and, FTR, I’m a liberal who voted for Clinton twice).
