I did it, I did it! I built my own website!!

Okay, so it’s bare bones, and just temporary because it’s a political website, but I did it! I am so proud of me!!

I’m not sure if it’s spam or not to list the web addresss…I’m not selling anything, just hoping to defeat a ballot initiative. Mods, if this is not appropriate, please delete this thread.

So, for those Dopers in Florida who want to preserve your freedom of choice when it comes to restaurant dining, please visit

noamendment6.com

Thanks!!!

Congratulations! Feels good, doesn’t it? watch you don’t become addicted and start designing pages just to play with it. (I had a “shell” webpage that I browsed the SDMB with which accepted keyboard commands just to practive JavaScript :p)

Another smoking ban! I know what this is like, I live in a town that has banned smoking in all public areas for about a year now Ottawa, Canada. It’s a real touchy issue here. You are fortunate however. We were not given the opportunity to vote on the matter. It was simply adopted as a city bylaw.

A major problem with these initiatives is the fact that one cannot really dispute the fact that it’s “a good idea”. Clearly, eliminating smoke in restaurants and bars results in a healthier environment.

If you try to argue that people should be allowed to decide where they wish to eat or drink, you’ll be hit with the argument that restaurant and bar employees have a right to work in a smoke-free environment.

I think that the only solid argument against this is the fact that this is not what these people were elected to do. Period. No matter how well-intentioned it may be.

If you hire someone to paint your house, and they decide to wash your car instead, they should not be let off the hook simply because the car was dirty.

Ah, yes, but did anyone force them to work as a waiter or waitress? I’ve worked as a waitress, and from my experience, smokers are better tippers, and this was the general consensus of the people I worked with.

From what I’ve read in the news, the Florida Restaurant Association is opposed to this ban. I’m trying to get in touch with them to let them know about the website, but no luck yet. I’ll keep trying…

No, of course no one is forced to become a waiter or bartender…but this is the type of argument you should try to avoid.

You need to find common ground for smokers and non-smokers in order to oppose this proposition.

Well, I don’t smoke, so I think that carries some weight. I have also spoken to several of the Libertarian Party County chairs, and they agree this measure needs to be defeated.

Ah, so you’re responsible for the creation of web page #346,434,223,465,232,355 today!

Congratulations on your website.

As far as the smoking ban, we’ve had a ban on smoking in public buildings for a while now here in California.
There was a lot of protest from restaurant and bar owners that it was going to kill their business.
It didn’t.
I have friends who waitress in bars who didn’t like the idea. They too were convinced it would kill business and drive their tips down. But afterwards they all remarked how much better it was not having to breathe the smoke all night and not having their hair and clothes smell from the tobacco after they got off work. They didn’t notice any drop in tips. Even if smokers are better tippers, they are still going to eat and drink, even if they have to step outside to smoke.

As to the Florida Restaurant Association being opposed to the ban, I’ll bet if you look into it you will find some connection between them and the tobacco industry much like what was found between the Massachusetts Restaurant Association and the tobacco industry in their attempt to defeat local laws that would restrict smoking in public places in Massachusetts.

But whatever side you are on, it’s good to get information out there.
Being a political website though, you might be required to have some kind of disclosure as to where your funding is coming from? IANAL but I’d suggest looking into the laws covering this to avoid any hassles.

Good luck!

I just mess with the free ones. But even those get old soon. Nobody is going to give you free unlimited space.

If you’re not sure if your thread is allowable at the SDMB, the appropriate method is to e-mail a staff member first instead of creating it anyway with the hope that it won’t be deleted.

Well, I posted links à go go when I was running (both times) and nobody seemed to have a problem with it.

matt_mcl - there is no problem with her link. If there were I would have said so. But if you’re not sure when something is acceptable or not at the SDMB, the right way to do it is to ask first.
