There was an Atlanta Falcons game in '95 or '96 when a player went up to try to catch a long pass, came down, and stayed down. You couldn’t really see what had happened, so they went to commercial while the medics checked him out. When they came back , the announcers said, “If you’re squeamish, don’t watch this replay…”
Somehow he’d broken both bones in his shin at once, and his right foot flopped up and kicked his right knee. Maybe it was his left; I don’t remember, and it was hard to see while retching like that.
I saw Ron Jaworski’s leg get broken in a game against the Cardinals at Bush Stadium in 1984. Happened right in front of me (IIRC, it was somewhere near the 20 or 30 yard line? – can’t find any details on it, though). It wasn’t so bad as to be career-ending, like Theisman’s was, but it was pretty nasty nonetheless.
The Ed McCaffery leg break(which I will always remember anyway cause it was the last thing I saw before going to bed and waking up to 9/11), wasn’t quite as bad, But as he rolled to a stop his lower leg was clearly bouncing around, with m ovement unrelated to his upper leg
I remember hearing about the Thiesman break after the fact but didn’t see the replay until this past year on “I Love the 80s”. The one that gets me is that high stick in the hockey game a few years ago that put the guy’s eye out. I didn’t see that either but read a follow-up story about his treatment, which also recapped the incident. : bleah smilie :
