We appear to be talking past each other. Let me try this again.
You did not “poison the well,” and I never said you did. I just said you wrote an OP that was better suited for IMHO or GD than it was for GQ.
We tried to sweep what under the rug? I made no attempt to limit what appeared to be a good discussion. We have lengthy and informative discussions in IMHO, GD, and other areas of the SDMB all the time. I just put your thread in a location I felt was more appropriate.
If you feel that the questions were answered, then what are you complaining about? I don’t mean that to be snarky, I genuinely don’t understand. You seem to be saying that you got exactly what you wanted and you’re upset about it.
Gary: Don’t you sometimes just get tired of it all, Colibri? Want to go somewhere easier?
Colibri: Yeah, I know. All the bickering about petty issues that don’t amount to nuthin’. It’s discouraging.
Gary: I hear there’s some Mod openings at the “Puppies vs. Kittens” forum over at Flamewars.ru.
Colibri: Wow, that would be great! And best of all, nobody ever complains about the malware at those Russian sites. 100 times the infection rate, and never a peep outta the bastards.
Gary: Here’s the application form, but you better hurry, I sent mine in yesterday, and this one should fill up fast.
What’s done is done. I could have worded the question better. I don’t consider the literal interpretation of my question to be reasonable. I don’t think most people would, and this is backed up by the discussion that followed. When I read that paper, I knew either the authors were doing very bad research, deliberately faking research or I was misunderstanding the paper. I addressed all of those possibilities in the OP. It seems as if suggesting the first two possibilities is against the GQ rules.

I’m complaining because despite the fact that the question had been more or less answered, there may have been some more interesting technical bits coming. IMHO may be a great place for people who live and breath the SDMB, but in my personal experience, there is a contingent of very technically qualified people that simply don’t bother with the other forums. Even now that I’ve decided that the other forums have some entertainment value, when I only have a short time to available, I stick with GQ and Cafe Society.
You need to get out of the heads of people that consider the SDMB a home on the web and into the heads of technical people that mainly come looking for interaction with people in other technical fields. The SDMB is unique in the diversity of expertise here. If I want to know about something technical, in a different field, I can ask it here knowing that the answer I get will at least be good enough to get me on the right track for my own research. Hell, I just learned that the Russians may have discovered carbon nanotubes in the 50s, and that’s my own field.
That’s a bit of a tautology, isn’t it? I mean, the people who were complaining were complaining because of their understanding.
Oh please. This is nothing about offending anyone, this is about the framing of the OP not matching the forum in which the question was placed. It’s about interpretation of the words actually written vs the OP’s intent. Only Stranger is worked up over the reputation of the researcher, and he’s really more concerned about the principle of the matter.
Eh, this isn’t a train throwing up sparks, it’s a message board post that was worded inappropriately for the forum in which it was placed.
I think if you had phrased it that way, it would have been fine in GQ.
