I suspected this was the real problem. The only thing worse than racism itself is being thought a racist by someone else. This explains both the OP and the long, long ensuing argument not over the actual effects of actual actions, but beliefs and whether they meet the standard of some definition. In the last 20 years most discussions of racism have been precisely this, little to do with the actual experiences of minorities but much to do with the esteem and standing of white people
Given a chance to do something that in your own judgment would stop actual racism, yet expose you to credible accusations of racist intentions, would you do it? Or are you too worried about what other people think? This is a generic question, not directed at even sven.
I dunno. Would you do something to stop Nazis if it meant everyone would think you are a Nazi? What a dumb question. Nobody wants to be perceived as something they if d repugnant, and that doesn’t somehow exclude also not likening those things you find repugnant.
Oh yeah, I forgot that all white people live lives of such leisure and ease that we have no right to form opinions on anything. I’ll get back to grooming my Pomeranian now, and leave the thinking to my Authentic Keepin’-it-Real sisters who understand the streets.
Ooh, touchy. I’m just saying if someone thinking that you think a bad thing is worse than actual bad things happening, then you may need to get a grip. There have been numerous times when I’ve done something good, was briefly irritated that it looked bad on my part from the outside, then moved on with life and had a sandwich later.
Who ever said that? If she is burning crosses and beating up black dudes, obviously that’s a huge problem. But if she wants to sit in her room and stew about how the neighborhood is going downhill, it’s not objectively a great thing, but is not super high on my list of things to worry about.
What she did was bring her bullshit into my life, making it affect me and making me angry on a nice warm evening. Don’t tell that shit to anyone, but most relevantly, don’t tell it to me n
Actually yes, there are plenty of white-supremacists who are quite fond of Chinese and Japanese. Google the term “honorary aryan”. Are you ignorant of that fact, or does the fact that white racialists can be quite self-contradicting and irrational surprise you?
D’oh! I need to remember that drinking while posting isn’t the best idea.
Anyway, FWIW, I assume everyone recognizes I was merely making a joke regarding how this site unfortunately tends to draw “scientific” racists like flies.
I kissed a black guy a few weeks ago. I’d like my fucking cookie now.
Really? I’ve been thinking SE the whole time, maybe around Navy Yard. Or maybe RFK.
As an ex of mine once said: “People from Maryland drive like they have really good health insurance.”
(I say this as someone who moved to Northern Virginia from Maryland. And as someone who recently hit a car while I was trying to parallel park…but not in DC.)
Of course I have, but when it happens I’m pissed at myself for letting it slide instead of running to the internet to tell everyone how awesome I am because I hate social injustice, even if I won’t even tell a middle-aged lady to piss off in defense of my beliefs.
You kidding? She has so much savoir-faire, her l’esprit de l’escalier hits when she’s still à l’étage noble! <bruit d’un coup frappé sur le cercle et la peau d’une caisse claire, qui ne peut pas être exprimée en français par un seul mot>
Everyone needs to get the fuck off of even sven’s back about her “cowardly” running to the Internet and posting about something. In case you all hadn’t noticed, we’re all participating on an Internet message board, the content of which is 100% comprised of people running to the Internet and posting about stuff. “Oh, of course I have had similar thoughts, but I didn’t run to the Internet and post them!” Well, good for you. Have yourself a goddamn cookie. Eat it while you read threads posted by other people who did bother to post their thoughts for your enjoyment and/or amusement.
FWIW, someone got mugged on my front doorstep yesterday (at 9AM! Who the hell pulls a gun on someone on a busy street during rush hour?), and the victim was a middle-aged black lady. So I guess the baddies have decided to branch out or something.
What-the-Fuckaroonie: “I make judgements on all black people because they belong to the same group.”
Little J-Bats: “I make judgement on all Tea Party members because the belong to the same group”
I ask you, Teeming Millions, who’s on more solid footing? Remember, I have Tea Party members all congregating in the same place and holding signs that all say pretty much the same thing. Dolty McWhat-the-Fuck has, “But they’re all the same color!”
